For the Hell of It ...and Souvenirs!
"For the Hell of It....and Souvenirs!" follows a group of young Marines whose friendships grow through training to the battlefront and beyond. As the pains of war for them include a first love strained by separation, a spouse's letter that shatters a soldier's world, and frequent brushes with death, this group of friends must rely on each other to get through the physical and emotional ravages of war.
John Maltese, Jr., transcribed this previously unpublished work written by his late father, John T. Maltese, a former Marine who served in World War II. "For the Hell of It....and Souvenirs!" brings to life a time of great change from the eyes of a close group of friends - their emotional bond will leave you yearning for more.
John T. Maltese (1924-1995) wrote this novel in the late 1950s while teaching Journalism in Steubenville, Ohio. The manuscript sat in the attic of his home for more than 40 years.
“The Story Behind this Book”
Our father, John T. Maltese, a former Marine, wrote this book in the late 1950’s while he was teaching at Steubenville High School in Steubenville, Ohio. Our mother, Sophia, tirelessly typed the story using an old manual 1950’s typewriter. For the next forty years the manuscript of more than 650 pages sat in a box in the attic of my parents’ home. My father had passed away in 1995, and with the exception of my mother reading it while typing the novel, no one else had ever read the book.
In 2005, I asked my mother to bring the now yellowing pages up to Michigan on one of her visits to my home. I planned on giving the book a chance and see if it was “readable”. I started reading my dad’s book and could not put it down. I asked my mom why my dad had never had the book published. She explained the difficulty in the 1950’s of having a book published, especially on a teacher’s salary. I told her I felt we should have a few copies of the book published for the family’s sake as a legacy to my father and her, especially so their grandchildren would have copies of his book. She gave me permission to publish the book.
Is this book fact or fiction? Are the characters in this book real? Unfortunately, due to my father's death in 1995, and no one reading the book until myself in 2008, these questions cannot be answered. I believe it is a story based on facts as well as fiction. This book was written by J. T. Maltese who served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was a rifleman, a private who fought on many island “rocks” in the Pacific, including Peleliu and Okinawa. I believe my father used his experiences during his time in the corps to write this novel, times that he spoke of often with such pride and honor.
Over the past few years when I have had the opportunity to discuss with others the possibility of having this book published, I have realized there are many others who may wish to read and enjoy this story by a Marine who served in WWII. These individuals include not only my dad’s family members, but I also received encouragement from other former Marines, including those who served in WWII, and others from that generation. Family members, sons and daughters, and grandchildren of those who served in the war or lived during this period have expressed interest in reading this book.
Or maybe you were one of my father’s students. You probably remember the days when students who did not want to hear the class lecture on the subject of the day would coerce my father into getting off the class subject by asking him, “So, Mr. Maltese, how did you win the war?” Then an hour later, the bell would ring signaling the end of the class period, no class lecture taught, but what a great “war story” you had just heard.
Although this book may be a “wartime romance” novel, please remember while reading, from beginning to end, this is a book about Marines in WWII, written by a Marine, and the final story is about Marines.
This book is now published in his honor as a legacy for his family and friends.
