Chapter OneIt was late autumn and most of the leaves had fallen off the trees in the northern Maine town of Millinocket, located at the base of the state's tallest mountain, Mount Katahdin. Mount Katahdin had long been known as the gateway to the hundred mile wilderness, but that was not its only claim to fame: It was thought to be the source of mystical powers that allowed wild animals to speak and was believed to be the home of the Great Spirit Moose. He was the keeper of knowledge passed down through the ages and the caretaker of all who visited that special place.
Max and Sawyer were best friends and fellow fifth graders at Granite Street Elementary School. The boys, like many of their classmates, preferred to spend their time exploring the outdoors rather than studying at school and this fall was no exception. The boys were finally old enough to camp overnight on their own, and had decided to investigate the mystery of the Great Spirit Moose and Mt. Katahdin for themselves.
Max suggested a plan to Sawyer. "Let's hike the mountain and camp there this weekend." Sawyer was quick to reply, "Let's leave early on Saturday so we will have time to explore the peaks." The boys were going to get their chance to tackle the mighty Katahdin on their own terms without their parents watching over their every move. It was only Monday so this was going to be a long week filled with excitement, anticipation, and planning.
You would not have wanted to be Max or Sawyer's dad for those five days. Both boys spent each night asking their dads all they knew about the legend of the mighty mountain. Sawyer's dad told him everything he had heard about the Great Spirit Moose since he was a boy, stating, "Around these parts, the Great Spirit Moose is the symbol of courage and wisdom and helps lost hikers find their way home."
Max's dad, an avid outdoorsman, told him about the wildlife that inhabited the mountain and reminded him to steer clear of the powerful Maine black bear. He also showed him pictures of what moose tracks look like, and cautioned him to remain on the main trails when hiking to avoid getting lost.
