Description: This book describes the use of high frequency ultrasound in the evaluation of focal neuropathies and blends this with a discussion of electrodiagnostic techniques, which have historically been used to characterize focal nerve disorders. The chapters are organized into anatomic regions; each chapter includes case examples and extensive illustrations.
Purpose: As technological advances have led to high-quality resolution in ultrasound imaging, medical literature outlining the use of ultrasound in the assessment of muscle and nerve has exploded over the past decade. This work carefully describes ultrasound techniques in specific nerve as well as plexus evaluations. In addition, it provides anatomic details and a discussion of related nerve conduction techniques in each chapter. Relevant clinical information complements the nuanced details of the techniques. There is also a chapter outlining ultrasound findings in generalized neuromuscular conditions.
Audience: This work both introduces nerve ultrasound and electrodiagnostic techniques to those inexperienced in field and, in later chapters, offers sufficient detail to be a useful reference to those already practicing either or both techniques. It is written by a pioneer in the field of neuromuscular ultrasound who is a respected clinician in the field of electrodiagnostics.
Features: A description of basic electrodiagnostic techniques and principles begins the book, followed by two introductory chapters on ultrasound. The first details the physics of ultrasound, with ample diagrams and screen images of both equipment and sonographic images to illustrate the relevant points. The second reviews in detail the ultrasound evaluation of peripheral nerves. These three introductory chapters are written at a basic level and would be understood by resident physicians or practicing physicians new to either of these diagnostic tools. Each subsequent chapter reviews the techniques used for each major peripheral nerve and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of ultrasound and nerve conduction as tools in the evaluation of a specific neuropathy.
Assessment: This will be a useful teaching manual for resident and practicing physicians who are familiar with electrodiagnostics, but are expanding their clinical skills in the area of ultrasound. In addition, the detailed anatomy, in conjunction with the relevant ultrasonographic scanning techniques, earns this book a place as a useful resource for those already familiar with nerve ultrasound. This is among the first books that address the complementary roles of ultrasound and electrodiagnosis in nerve evaluation, if not the first. It does not disappoint.
