About the Author

Paul T. Hellmann is a freelance writer and geographer who most recently researched, wrote, and/or edited 33,000 entries (about one-fourth of the total) for the new Columbia Gazetteer of the World, for which he did field research in 37 states. He has also written a historical tour guide of Frederick County in Virginia and many articles for other reference books. Other work experience includes creating rural address systems for seven counties and researching address systems for the Census.

Gr 8 Up-In his introduction to this geographical dictionary, the author explains that his goal to list as many significant events as possible "superseded any hope of being comprehensive-." As a result, definite gaps and inconsistencies appear in the information presented. The book is arranged alphabetically by state; each one is introduced with brief information on the history, the number of counties or parishes, and short explanations of municipality classification and townships. Following this information are alphabetical listings of the cities, towns, and villages of note. Under each one, important dates and events are cited. Most entries are no more than a dozen lines, though larger cities often command more attention. Each entry contains specific facts about the founding, incorporation, and source of name, if known. Other items vary but include important fires or tornadoes, city name changes, schools and libraries established, and well-known people who were born and/or died there, and more. Occasional errors were spotted. For example, the original name of Kansas State University was not Belmont College, but Bluemont College. (There is no indication of the name changes between the original and the present-day name, of which there have been at least three.) An extensive index concludes the book.
