Reasons I’ve Reread Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Half a Dozen Times
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of those magical and timeless reads that has inspired the imaginations of countless children (and adults!) since it was first published in 1865. From movies and television shows, to animation, theater, and everything else in between, this dreamlike story has sparked countless artists to create their own interpretations. (There’s now even an adult coloring book version!) I am just one of the millions of readers who has been enchanted by this story. I have read my own dogeared copy of this book around half a dozen times, and I’m sure there are still many more times to come. These are the six top reasons I keep going back:

You always notice something different
Each time I’ve revisited this book I’ve picked up on some new detail that I somehow missed out on the times before. And it’s no wonder—author Lewis Carroll has created such a rich and detailed world so unlike our own that it’s easy to miss something! Do you remember the Fish Footman or the Caucus-race or the Mock Turtle? If not, I’d say it’s time for a reread!

Escapism
Who doesn’t want to escape down the rabbit hole every once in a while? Sometimes the real world is a drag and that’s what makes fantasy books so much fun! I took for granted how ahead of its time this book was when it was originally published, because so many other books have drawn inspiration from it since! To have a book filled with nonsense words and riddles was a novel idea a hundred years ago. Not the case anymore—the next time you pick up a book like The Wizard of Oz or Coraline, in which a girl gets transported to another fantasy world, you may be reminded of Lewis Carroll.

The Genius of Lewis Carroll
The more I learn about Lewis Carroll the more curious I am. Carroll was a mathematician turned author, who based this particular tale on a real young girl he knew named Alice Liddell. He was also an amateur photographer and inventor. His other classic titles, such as Through the Looking Glass: And What Alice Found There don’t have the same place in my heart as Alice in Wonderland does, but they are also pretty fabulous as well.
The Poetry
This book is fun to read out loud for many reasons, one being all of the poems weaved in throughout the text. Try not to smile while reading quirky little bits of poetry like “Twinkle, twinkle, little bat! How I wonder where you’re at!”
The Queen of Hearts
The Queen of Hearts is one of my favorite fictional villains and she has one of the best evil catch phrases of all time: “Off with their heads!” Poor Alice. Who knew a croquet playing queen with an army made up of playing cards could inspire so much terror?
