The Battle for World Domination Continues in The Dragon’s Return, Book 2 of The Zodiac Legacy

The Zodiac Legacy
The Zodiac Legacy series tells a rip-roaring story of young teens who embody truly fantastic super-powers that come from the 12 animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac. Each sign has its own cool attributes. Rabbit, for instance, can escape any time she wants by teleporting, Rooster can kill with sonic waves, and Ram is indestructible. Roughly half of the characters who’ve been chosen by the 12 Zodiac powers are part of the team of good guys; the others are working for an insane megalomaniac, a man named Maxwell, who’s planning world domination.

The first book of the series, Convergence, told how Steven Lee, a 14 year-old Chinese American kid, acquired the powers of Tiger, and became part of a frantic search for the other newly born Zodiac powers. The unlikely team that resulted from this search learned to work together, becoming more confident in their powers…and in their confrontation with Maxwell, they emerged the winners.
But Maxwell hasn’t given up. The second book, The Dragon’s Return, is an even more wild and dangerous adventure. Jasmine, who is now the embodiment of the power of the Dragon, the most powerful of all the Zodiac beings, is fighting to master that power without losing her humanity. In the meantime, Steven is still exploring what it really means to be Tiger, while trying hard to keep the rest of their team together in case Maxwell threatens them again.
Which he does, with a series of cunning traps and manipulations, leading to a whole second half of edge-of-your-chair danger and excitement!

These books have tons of appeal for any young reader who thrills to the idea of ordinary teens being granted with supernatural gifts, and caught up in wild and dangerous adventures. (I can’t help but suggest that Percy Jackson fans will like this series a lot.) The themes of teamwork and loyalty, and of people being able to change the direction of their lives, are also an important part of The Dragon’s Return. This adds a nice bit of emotional weight and psychological interest to the story and to the dangers the characters face—the kids become much more than just their neat super-powers.
Though the central characters are teenagers, the content level is still appropriate for tweens ages 10-12. And it’s a good gateway book to the Young Adult shelves, as Steven, the main character, is just starting to think about romance, and the action is intense, without being too gruesome or dark for someone who’s still a kid. Adding to the kid-friendliness, especially for those who aren’t yet committed readers, are numerous engaging comic book-style (after all, this is a series by Marvel’s Stan Lee) illustrations that bring the action vividly to life.
