If Your Kids Love Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, They’ll Love These Books for Little Activists

The latest U.S. government climate report got buried in the news on Black Friday. It’s a grave climate warning that forecasts dire claims backed by 13 federal agencies, from “nationwide heat waves to dwindling snowpacks in the West. In blunt and disturbing terms, it also envisions the devastation yet to come.” Our children have inherited an environmental disaster. Fortunately, activism books for young readers are trending on the shelves right now, which makes parents like me hopeful for change. My daughters and I have devoured both volumes of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. They love reading about the girls and young women who’ve stood up and raised their voices.

If your family loves Rebel Girls, here’s a handful of similar books that will inspire.

We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices, edited by Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson
The founders of Just Us Books have put together an anthology of thirty illustrated essays, poems, stories, and letters from authors and illustrators of different backgrounds who offer advice and hope. For example, Jason Reynolds writes “A Talkin’-To,” about “everything bad and frightening and loud.” Jacqueline Woodson pens a letter to her children about being kind. Tony Medina describes a girl’s father being taken away by immigration officials. Heavy stuff, but tackled by strong voices that will stick with your kids.
