#MeToo and Middle Grade

The #MeToo movement shook American media and politics last year, and now, thanks to writers such as Anne Ursu and Kelly Jensen, the publishing industry is reckoning with sexual harassment, too.

The #MeToo campaign first went viral thanks to a tweet from Alyssa Milano, but it’s Tarana Burke who deserves credit for the hashtag she came up with a decade ago. And now, children’s publishing is investigating harassment in its own ranks.

Talking to young children about sexual harassment can be challenging because they don’t yet know about sex, but it’s never too early to start a conversation about boundaries and respect and consent. That’s why we’ve come up with some examples of middle grade novels that illustrate both strong female heroines and the boys who respect them.

Breadcrumbs, by Anne Ursu
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, this novel follows Hazel—who was adopted from South Asia, has recently switched schools, where she’s bullied and misunderstood. Her best friend, Jack, is spending more time with his male friends than with her. Then a demon drops a shard of an enchanted mirror into his eye, and drugged and manic, he accompanies the Snow Queen into the wintry woods. Hazel decides to follow him. This is an incredibly lyrical and magical story about friendship.
