Romance

Linda Howard’s Troublemaker is the Best Kind of Mischief!

There’s a winning combination that I look for when I read a romance novel. The first is that there has to be an underlying mystery. Not necessarily a crime or a major puzzle to solve, but something that leaves you guessing and unsure of what’s coming next.  And the second part, and perhaps the most important, is that there needs to be a build-up to the kinds of love scenes that make you turn to the person lying next to you in bed and give them that special look that tells them tonight is their lucky night.

And let me tell you, Linda Howard’s Troublemaker has both of these elements in spades. There’s mystery, there’s intrigue, there are twists and turns that throw you off guard. And there’s sex. Oh, is there sex! Such great sex scenes that I wanted to fan myself at the end of those chapters.
From the start of the book, you are easily drawn into the budding romance between Isabeau “Bo” Maran and Morgan Yancy, a mysterious man who is recovering from an attempted assassination by an unknown shooter. With the armed man still out on the loose and no clues how to find him, Yancy, a paramilitary operative, has been forced to give up his usual control of a situation now that he’s found himself in the care of a stranger who runs a police force in the smallest town he’s ever seen.
And weaved through it all is Bo’s delightful dog, Tricks; a golden retriever who endears himself to not only the characters, but to the reader, as well. And I’m not even a dog person!
Howard brilliantly takes her time with the romance between this unlikely duo, with the kind of subtle building-up of emotions and attraction that I absolutely love. It’s frustrating in romance when two characters are suddenly in love and you are left feeling rushed and confused by their instant, not-believable connection. Fortunately, the opposite occurs in Troublemaker. Howard slowly develops this couple’s relationship as it progresses from annoyance, to friendship, to attraction, in a way that makes you cheer them on page by page. By the time the first sex scene occurs, you are chomping at the bit for it to happen as much as they are!
And it’s not just Morgan who is the tough one in this story. Bo’s personality exudes a no-games mentality that offers a refreshing approach to a female love interest. She doesn’t swoon; she doesn’t fall immediately under his spell. She calls the shots and makes the moves just as much as he does. Which, to me, makes for a more erotic and enticing dynamic.
I’ll put it plain and simple for you. If you like a little mystery and a lot of great sex and build up, you will absolutely love Troublemaker. Throw it in your bag for the pool or beach, or better yet, read it in bed next to a loved one who just might get lucky once you can finally manage to put it down.
