New Customer Checkout
Placing an order with Barnes & Noble.com is quick and easy. New customers can check out and create an account at the same time; or they can complete their order without creating an account. Once you have an account, you'll be able to:
- Shop and check out faster on your next visit
- Check your order status online
- Receive your Member benefit on online purchases
- Obtain a history of items you've purchased
- Receive updates on special offers, events, and new products and services
- Retain items in your Cart and Wish List
1. Add Items to Your Cart
To shop at Barnes & Noble.com, just locate an item you'd like to purchase and click the "Add to Cart" button. These buttons are usually found beside featured products, on product pages, and search results pages. Clicking this button places the item in your Cart. Each time you click "Add to Cart," the page will refresh and display the newest item in your Cart, as well as previous additions, items of interest, and links to "View Entire Cart" or "Proceed to Checkout." Note: NOOKbooks and other digital content on the site have "Buy Now" buttons. Learn more about buying NOOKbooks.
2. View Entire Cart
You do not have to view your entire Cart before you check out, but it's a great place to look over your order. The Cart displays all the items you have selected and lets you make adjustments. You can increase or reduce the number of copies you'd like to buy; move items to and from your Wish List, or remove items from your Cart. It also provides a subtotal -- before any shipping charges and taxes are applied -- for your purchase. Once you're comfortable with the items in your Cart, click the "Proceed to Checkout" button.
NOTE: If you sign in to your account but do not complete an order, the items you place in your Cart will remain there for two weeks. You can come back within that time frame, click the Cart link at the top of most pages on the site, and complete your order. If you do not have an account, your items will not be saved after the end of your shopping session.
3. Proceed to Checkout
All customers are taken to our Checkout page, where returning customers can sign in to their accounts and new customers can complete their orders. Click the Checkout button under the New Customers heading. You will be able to create an account during this process. If you wish, you may also complete your order without creating an account.
4. Enter a Shipping Address
We'll ask you to provide a shipping address for the order you are placing and ask for your email address so we can send you updates on its order status. Once you enter this information, click "Continue Checkout." Depending on the composition of your order -- and to determine whether or not you will receive Free Shipping or Free Member Express Shipping -- you may be asked for some or all of the following information:
- A Shipping Preference (for example, "Ship everything together" or "Send items as they are available")
- A shipping method (for example, Standard Delivery)
5. Choose a Payment Method
Here you select your payment method. If your billing address is different from the shipping address you selected, you'll be asked to enter it now. If you're a Barnes & Noble Member, or have a coupon, Gift Card, Gift Certificate, or Reward Certificate, you'll be able to enter the necessary information here. We also allow you to Pay by Phone.
You may not use Gift Cards, eGift Cards, Online Gift Certificates, pre-paid debit cards or PayPal to purchase rental materials from the Website.
6. Creating an Account
At this point, since you're a new customer, you'll be able to create an account. Provide your name and email address, create a password, and select a security question and answer. When you're done, click "Create Account & Continue" to go to the Review page. If you wish to complete your order without creating an account, click "Continue Without Account" to go directly to the Review page.
7. Reviewing and Placing Your Order
You're almost done! On the Review page you'll find a summary of your order, including the final cost. Before you submit your order, you'll also have the chance to change any of the shipping or payment information you've entered thus far, or update your gift options. When you are ready, click "Place My Order" to complete the ordering process.
Your Order Number
Finally, we display a page with your order number, which you can save for your records; a link to "View Your Receipt," which will provide a printable version of all the details of your order; and a "Sign Out" button. Shortly after this page displays, you will receive an email confirming the details of your order.
Fulfillment for Digital Products
When you purchase SparkNotes and Quamut Charts, Digital Magazines, or Audiobook MP3s, we'll also send you an email after Checkout with a link and easy-to-follow instructions on how to download those products.
Returning Customer Checkout
If you've shopped at Barnes & Noble.com before and have an account, Checkout lets you store default shipping and billing information and place orders quickly. For example: If you have set your default information, you will only have to look over the Shipping and Review pages before placing most orders. NOTE: In order to improve security on the site, we now require that our customers select a Security Question and provide a Security Answer. In the event you forget your password or want to change your account profile, we use your Security Answer to verify your identity. If you haven't shopped at Barnes & Noble.com since we enhanced our security, you will be prompted to add this information the next time you sign in to your account. See details.
Since you've already shopped here before, you are probably familiar with the Checkout process described in our New Customers section. But we've also added the following new features.
- Longer Cart Duration:
If you have signed in to your account but do not complete an order, the items you placed in your Cart will remain there for two weeks.
NOTE: If you do not complete the Checkout process and return within two weeks to add more items to your Cart, you will go straight to the Review page after signing in to Checkout. Items from your previous visit will still be in your Cart and will be listed on the Review page, so please look over all listed items before placing your order.
- New Gift & Message Options:
Now you can choose which items you want gift-wrapped and attach a message to each item. See Details.
- Gift Card & Gift Certificate Options:
Now you can add Gift Cards and Gift Certificates to your Cart without going through a separate Checkout process.
- New Payment Options:
If you do not want us to save any of the credit card data you entered during Checkout, you can uncheck the box to save your credit card information on the Create an Account page, and we will not store your credit card data or your credit card billing address to your account. You will have to reenter this information to make your next purchase.
In general, purchasing NOOKbooks at Barnes & Noble is as easy as clicking a mouse. That's because NOOKbooks are available to you as soon as you click the "Buy Now" button on a NOOKbook page. Once you click that button, you can go to "My NOOK Library" and transfer your purchase to your iPhone, Blackberry or computer.
To make that purchase, however, you must set up a default credit card in your account. If you don't have an account, don't worry. After you click "Buy Now," you'll be asked to create an account. If you have an account, but don't have a default credit card, you'll be asked to select a credit card or enter a new one. Placing an Order by Phone
After You've Ordered Online
To place an order by phone, simply click the "Pay by Phone" button at the bottom of the Payment page. You may pay by phone for all items in your Cart. To use this method, please wait until you've received the confirmation email stating that your order has been received. Then, just call us at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665): Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-11 p.m. ET, Saturday-Sunday (and Holidays) 9 a.m.-11 p.m. ET. Customers outside the U.S., please call 201-559-3882. If we do not receive payment information within 7 days of receiving your order, it will be automatically canceled from our system.
Without Ordering Online
If you do not wish to complete an order on our web site, we can still take your order over the phone. Items in your Cart show their current prices. These are identical to those displayed on the product and search pages. However, adding an item to your Cart does not lock in that price. Prices frequently change, so the price you are ultimately charged is the price at the time you complete your purchase.
Prices can change between the time you place an item in your Cart and the moment you finish Checkout, for many reasons. Barnes & Noble.com's discounts, for example, may depend on a product's availability; on the duration of sales, special promotions, and limited-time offers; on a title's appearance on a bestseller list; and on other factors.
Our vendors supply Barnes & Noble.com with product information, including the list price. Occasionally, vendors will change the list price of a product before the release date. If a vendor increases the list price of a product, we will contact you so that you have the option to accept the higher price or cancel the order.
We do not charge your credit card until your order ships. Magazine charges, however, are processed as soon as you place your order.
The stock position of any item we sell can change from the time that your order is placed until we confirm that your order has shipped. When you place an order we will confirm the inventory availability and provide an estimated date when the items in your order will ship. If the availability of any of the items in your order changes, we will email you with an updated status as soon as it is available to us.
