Search the Store: Bookstore

Help Desk: Search the Store: Bookstore
You can search for books in two ways: Quick Search and Advanced Search.

If you don't know exactly what book you are looking for, Browse Subjects includes selections from our editors, Top Ten lists, and other features.

General Search Tips

Quick Search and Advanced Search both search our entire book catalogue. Quick Search is a single-field search. Advanced Search allows you to search on multiple fields and apply search filters.

Searching by Title
Enter all or part of the title you are looking for. You can leave out words such as "a", "an," or "the." The search engine will try to find books that have all the words you entered in the title. If no books are found with all the words, the search engine will try to find books with some of the words. Searching by Author
Enter all or part of the author name you are looking for. You do not need to enter a first name, but if there are a lot of books by authors with the same last name it may help to limit the results. You can enter a name as John Smith or Smith, John.

Searching by Keyword

The keyword search looks for all the words you entered relating to the title, author, subjects, and categories of books. For example, if you search on "United States Civil War," the search results page will display all books that contain "United States Civil War" in the title or author name, and are about the "United States Civil War." You can be as general (e.g., "Cooking") or as specific (e.g., "Italian Baking") as you wish. Be aware that if you select "keyword," your search results may be very long. You should choose title or author if you know that is what you are looking for.

Searching by ISBN

Enter the ten-digit ISBN (International Standard Book Number) you are looking for. This search will bring you to the one book with that exact ISBN number. You can enter the ISBN with or without hyphens.

Formatting Your Search

It is not necessary to use any special characters in formatting your search. Simply enter the words you are looking for. Quotation marks, plus signs, or Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) will be ignored by the search engine.

The search engine is case-insensitive. You can enter your search in all capitals, all lowercase, or mixed case.

Quick Search

1. Go to the search field at the top of most pages in the Book Store.

2. Type the desired title, author, keyword, or ISBN in the text field as described in the General Search Tips.

3. Select title, author, keyword, or ISBN from the pulldown menu to indicate the type of search you want and click on the "Search" button.

4. The search results will display a list of books that best match your search criteria, arranged in top matching order. You will be able to resort by bestselling order, or by publication date or title. ISBN searches will bring you to the one book with that exact ISBN number.

Advanced Search

The Advanced Search form allows you to search on one or more fields. Searching on more than one field may narrow your results to the exact book or books you are looking for.

Search by title, author, or keyword

1. Click on the Advanced Search link at the top of most pages in the Book Store.

2. Type the desired title, author, and/or keyword(s) in the text field as described in the General Search Tips.

3. You can enter information into one or more fields, but it is not required. The more specific the information you enter, the more exact your search results may be.

4. If desired, you can narrow your search further by selecting an option from one or more of the four dropdown menus: Price, Format, Age Range, or Subject.

Price
-- narrows your search to only books in a specific price range.
Format -- narrows your search to only books in a specific format, such as paperback or hardcover.
Age Range -- narrows your search to only Children's Books appropriate to a specific age range, such as "Ages 4 - 8."
Subject -- narrows your search to only books in a specific subject, such as "History" or "Travel."

5. When you have entered all the relevant information, click on the "Search" button to start your search.

Search by ISBN

1. Click on the Advanced Search link at the top of most pages in the Book Store.

2.
Type the ten-digit ISBN (International Standard Book Number) in the ISBN search field.

3. Click on the "Search" button to start your search. This search will only return the one book with that exact ISBN number.

Search Results

The search results page displays information about the book(s) that match your search. If the search engine isn't able to find any exact matches for your search, the page will display information about books that may be close to what you were looking for. Click on the title of the book to read more about that book, or to order the book.

Search results are presented in top matching order. You can also sort your results in bestselling order, or by publication date or title, by making your selection from the pull-down menu and clicking "go."

Search Results Questions

The list of results is too long. How can I narrow this list?
You can narrow the list of search results by clicking on the "Back to search page" button and entering more information, or by using a search filter as described in the Advanced Search section.

The list of results is too short. How can I get more results?
If you have entered too much search information, it is likely that the search engine was not able to find many books that met all your search criteria. You can remove or change some criteria by clicking the "Back to search page" button.

I didn't get any results. What did I do wrong?
  • Nothing. It may be that there are no books that match your search criteria. This may be the case if you have tried an ISBN search with an old ISBN. Retry your search by title or author.
  • Recheck your search. You may have mistyped your search, or put the search information in the wrong field.
  • Broaden your search. You may have entered too much search information. It is likely that the search engine was unable to find any books that met all your search criteria. Try removing one or more filters, or use only one search type. Or try using fewer title words or keywords.
Why did I get Out-of-Print Search Results?
When the search engine can't find any in-print books that match your search, it will automatically try the out-of-print database for matches. If this list doesn't include what you are looking for, click on "Advanced Search" to try a different search.
