Search the Store: DVD & Video

Help Desk: Search the Store: DVD & Video
You can search for DVD & Video in two ways: Quick Search and Advanced Search. If you don't know exactly what title you are looking for, All Genres includes selections from our editors, Top Ten lists, and other features. Top Sellers includes great films for all tastes and all occasions.

General Search Tips

Quick Search and Advanced Search both search our entire DVD & Video catalogue. Quick Search is a single-field search. Advanced Search allows you to search on multiple fields and apply search filters like the following: price, rating, genre, format, and original release date.

Searching by Title
Enter all or part of the DVD & Video title you are looking for. You can leave out words such as "a," "an," or "the." The search engine will try to find titles with all the words you entered. If none are found, the search engine will try to find titles with some of the words.

Searching by Actor
This search will query all first-name and last-name fields and will include any actor on a film, ranging from principal to supporting cast members. The results will include all titles for that actor. Searches can also be made for multiple names, resulting in titles with both contributors.

Searching by Director
This type of search can be performed within our Advanced Search and can yield a list of all works by a particular director.

Searching by Cast & Crew (Person)
This type of search can also be performed within our Advanced Search and will include any person on a film, ranging from producer to costume designer.

If the search engine finds more than one person with the same name, a page with a list of all matching people will be displayed. Select the person whose film you want to see.

Keyword
This search enables you to expand your search to include the genre of a film or even plotlines. This feature is especially helpful when you can't remember the name of a movie, but you know the topic.

Formatting Your Search
It is not necessary to use any special characters in formatting your search -- simply enter the words you are looking for. Quotation marks, plus signs, or Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) will be ignored by the search engine.

The search engine is case-insensitive. You can enter your search in all capitals, all lowercase, or mixed case.

Quick Search

1. Go to the search field at the top of most pages in the DVD & Video Store.

2. Type the desired artist, title, or song in the text field as described in the General Search Tips.

3. Select "title," "actor," "director," "cast & crew," or "keyword" from the pulldown menu to indicate the type of search, and click on the "Search" button.

4. The search results will display a list of films that match your search criteria, arranged in bestselling order.

Advanced Search

The Advanced Search form allows you to search on one or more fields. Searching on more than one field may narrow your results to the exact album or albums you are looking for.

1. Click on the Advanced Search link at the top of most pages in the DVD & Video Store.

2. Type the desired title, actor(s), director(s), cast & crew, or keywords into the appropriate text fields as described in the General Search Tips. Additionally, the Advanced Search allows you to search by screenwriter(s) and offers filters for price, genre, format, and release date.

3. If you are searching for a film with two or more specific people, separate their names with commas (for example, Robert Redford, Paul Newman).

4. You can enter information into one or more fields. Specific search criteria may provide very specific search results.

5. When you have entered all of the relevant information, click on the "Search" button to begin your search.

Search Results

The search results page displays information about the film(s) matching your search. If the search engine is not able to find an exact match for your search, the page will display information about films that may be close to what you were looking for. Click on the title of the film to read more about that DVD & Video or to place the order.

Search results are presented in bestselling order. To view your results in alphabetical order or in order of date released, resort the list by clicking on "A to Z" or "Date Released."

Search Results Questions

You can narrow the list of search results by clicking on "Advanced Search" and entering more information, or by using a search filter as described in the Advanced Search section.

The list of results is too short. How can I get more results?
If you have entered too much search information, it is likely that the search engine was not able to find many films that met all your search criteria. You can remove or change some criteria by clicking on "Advanced Search."

I didn't get any results. What did I do wrong?
  • Nothing. It may be that there are no films that match your search criteria.
  • Recheck your search. You may have mistyped your search, or put the search information in the wrong field.
  • Broaden your search. You may have entered too much search information. It is likely that the search engine was not able to find any films that met all your search criteria. Try using only one search type. Or try using fewer title words or keywords.
