Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
For those who just need to get rid of clutter or become more productive, not revamp their whole life, one of these books may be the ticket. Professional organizer Novack designed her guide for multitasking, overscheduled, just-saw-it-here-a-minute-ago people who need simple, straightforward instructions for de-cluttering. Although she addresses the whys and wherefores of the cluttering mentality, she cuts to the chase with practical tips to help straighten out rooms, financial records, office surfaces, and more. One can easily browse the book and pick out pertinent chapters. Guaranteed to circulate during its first week on the shelf; recommended for all libraries. A productivity expert, Stack (Leave the Office Earlier) applies her skills to the homefront. Through a series of quizzes and exercises, readers determine how certain personality traits may be getting in the way of using time effectively. She devotes a chapter each to eight pillars of personal productivity-plans, priorities, and pets-that support successful lives. While Stack's stance is valuable, her narrative is heavy on the verbiage. The time-stretched may become overwhelmed just browsing the book. Libraries with the budget for several books on organizing can purchase both Novak's and Stack's books. If one has to choose, Novak's is the more useful to its designated population. I Also Recommend:

    Super helpful super fast

Jamie's book was an excellent read that was chock full of great ideas and tips of all kinds. I've been on an organizing kick for about a year trying to get everything together and the main reason it was taking so long was I could not find a system that worked for me really well. Jamie offers several systems and multiple ideas on just about every topic related to organizing all kinds of items and information.

Since the book is broken down into sections it's easy to find exactly what you need so it's an excellent reference though I would suggest just reading the entire thing because alot of ideas can cross over easily. There were a couple of topics (like moving) I wish were covered more in-depth but she does refer you to a host of good references for all kinds of topics. There were a few typos that needed fixing that made a couple tips in the book confusing until you figured it out. It also may have been nice to see a couple illustrations or before and after shots just for inspiration.

I have lent the book to three people and they have loved it as well. I would recommend to anyone - the ones just starting and the ones having trouble with those last couple boxes or ones with that particular trouble spot in the house.

    Ok, but nothing new

This book is ok but it repeats itself a lot and has the most typos that I've seen in a book.

    Fabulous book!

This book is amazing. It is different than many other organizing books because it breaks tasks down into extremely manageable pieces. Even the busiest, most unorganized person can take a moment to apply one or two of the organizing secrets. That is Jamie Novak's philosophy: break large tasks down into bite-sized pieces. Most of the tips do not require that everything in an entire room be pulled off the shelves all at once. For example, Jamie suggests putting tableclothes onto hangers so they can be neatly hung in a closet. That one task will take perhaps 5 minutes, but will make a huge difference. The book is also extremely well organizing. It is set up so you can flip directly to the chapter applicable to a specific problem area, or read it cover to cover. I highly recommend this book!

    Quantity over quality

My biggest problem with this book is that many of the tips were extremely wasteful (use paper dishes for faster clean-up, or portion out laundry detergent in plastic bags). Also, the author recommended an armoire as a means of storage for just about every area of the house. Many of the tips felt redundant, and I was not compelled to read the whole thing. Given, there were some decent ideas, but not enough to make this book worth purchasing (check it out from the library like I did!)

    Practical and Applicable

I've had my book for approximately a month now and have utilized many of Jamie's ideas! This has helped me immensely in my professional and personal life. Thanks Jamie!
