    Abbie Ann

Abbie Ann Kane is the youngest of Jacob Kane's three daughters. She works at the Kane's store, teaches Sunday school, and leads the local women's temperance union in promoting women's rights and prohibition. She also helps abused women. Her causes aren't popular and she keeps her brother-in-law, Sheriff Gabriel Devlin busy investigating threats directed at Abbie Ann. Noah Carson used to run a successful shipworks in Connecticut until his business partner cheated him out of his share of the business and stole his wife. Now divorced, Noah is hoping for a fresh start, so he moves with his six-year-old son to the west shore of Michigan to join a window business. An unexpected accident propels Noah into Abbie Ann's life, and they are immediately attracted to the other. But Noah doesn't want anything to do with a God that allows bad things to happen-and Abbie Ann is a very committed Christian woman. What will have to happen to bring this couple together? ABBIE ANN is the third book in the Daughters of Jacob Kane series, but it easily stands alone. I enjoyed getting to know Abbie Ann and Noah (as well as his young son) and revisiting the other characters from other books. Set on the shores of Lake Michigan, I know the area where the fictional town of Sandy Shores well, and it is one of my favorite areas, even in the winter, the season the book begins with. The author did an excellent job letting me feel the blustery wind and the heavy lake effect snow that accumulates fast. If you are looking for a good historical book, pick up your copy of ABBIE ANN or any of the other books in this series. A preview of another book by Ms. MacLaren is included at the end.

    Another great book!!!

Way to go Sharlene MacLaren!! Another great book!!! This is the third book in the Daughters of Jacob Kane, and it was just as great as the first two!! I absolutely LOVED it!! If it hadn't been for work and chasing my 2-year-old son around, I wouldn't have put this book down once!!

    A truly TERRIFIC read!

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I've read all of Sharlene MacLaren's novels, and they never fail to keep me up ALL NIGHT!!! She has this talent for bringing her characters to life, making me cry over them one minute and laugh the next. By the end of the story I am always so sad to have to say goodbye. Abbie Ann was especially heartrending to me because it marked the end of the series. Now, I will just have to start all over at the beginning with Hannah Grace. And wait for the release of her next series. I hope it will come soon!

Don't miss this fascinating story. You'll find drama, humor, romance galore, an element of mystery and suspense, and under it all a gospel message, not too churchy, but enough to make you realize that God is in control, even when you can't see His hand working in the situation.

I would highly recommend this book.

Suspense, conflict and romance swirl around Jacob Kane's daughter, Abbie

Abbie Ann, by Sharlene MacLaren, Whitaker House, 2010, is the third and final installment in the "Daughters of Jacob Kane" series.

Abbie Ann Kane's work as president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union not only bothers her expected fiancé, but an unknown person who threatens her life.
WCTU members are concerned about alcohol's destruction of the family and society. Abbie Ann's group in Sandy Shores, Mich., goes into bars singing hymns and asking owners to close. Although it's 1907, and Carrie Nation's followers are still carrying axes, smashing taverns' fixtures and bottles, Abbie Ann's club is peaceful, but intrusive. Saloons owners and patrons don't like it, especially the drunk who came speeding down the street and caused the buggy of Noah Carson, recently divorced and the father of a young son, to crash through the window of Kane's Whatnot shop where Abbie works.
Is this drunk the one who threw the threatening note attached to a rock through the window? But he's in jail. Could it be a tavern owner? Who is the person she glimpses in the shadows following her? Who left the scrawled note in the store?
Eventually, the stalker and another man attempt to carry through on the threats.
But other events tangle themselves around Abbie. Peter Sinclair, vice president of Sandy Shores Bank and Trust, who has courted her for months, appears to love only himself. At the same time, Noah Carson, a boat builder, and his son, Toby, meddle with her heart.
The book has issues of unique interest, such as divorce, remarriage, renewing broken relationships, forgiveness. The author, through experience or in-depth research, relays expansive knowledge on building a racing yacht. The WCTU's activities are interesting, especially their help for alcoholics' families and the WCTU home for abused women.
I recommend Abbie Ann as a good read. The novel does stall a bit just before it goes into the ending, and uses past tense too much to suit me, but I admit some authors have a reason to use it. Sharlene MacLaren's characters come alive, she paints a vivid scene, and tells a good story. I'll let you find out how it ends.
