Book 3 in the Area 51 series

The bubonic plague was a trial run. Ebola was a dress rehearsal. The real destruction begins now, and, if the Airlia are successful, the result will be total annihilation of the human race...

Deep in the Amazon rain forest, villagers are falling to an unseen enemy-a brutal virus that inflicts plague-like symptoms and certain death. There's no cure for this Black Death, only the threat of imminent worldwide contagion. And the source, it seems, is not organic.

Scientist Lisa Duncan and Special Forces officer Mike Turcotte suspect the Airlia. Now that Area 51 has been exposed and a fleet of the aliens' warships destroyed, the virus could be the Airlia's last weapon. Duncan and Turcotte believe the source of the virus-and possibly their salvation-may lie with a mysterious place called the Mission, where they hope to give humankind a chance at survival. But the battle has only begun...

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Since the discovery of an alien presence on Earth in conjunction with extraterrestrial technology concealed in Area 51, a small group of humans continues to wage a battle to prevent a takeover by the race known as the Airlia. This third volume in Doherty's ongoing chronicle of human-alien clandestine warfare should appeal to fans of UFOs, conspiracy theories, and "ancient astronauts.

    Trending downward

The Mission is by far the weakest of the Area 51 books. The Area 51 series is a great concept, but the Mission was the most difficult of the series to read. I really enjoy the idea behind this series, but this book tempered my enthusiasm somewhat. I've checked out the author's web site and he plans several more books after this. After reading the Mission, I couldn't help but feel he's stretching this story out into too many books. The Mission wasn't nearly as riveting or interesting as the first two books. After finishing each of his previous books, I was left asking myself where the story was going and was anxious to find out. After the Mission, I was still wondering where the story is going to lead, but found myself confused and less interested. I hope The Sphinx (the next installment) recaptures the electricity of the first two books.

    Doherty is no biologist

The Mission was the most dissapointing of the series, mainly because Doherty didn't seem to do his homework. Not to give too much of the plot away, but you can't tell from an autopsy if somebody is a clone. This installment also veers into conspiracy heaven with more organizations and secrets than you can shake a stick at. Hopefully some of this will come to light in the fourth book.

Recommended, after reading the first two of the series.

Area 51 and Area 51 The Reply were well written and easy reading with suspenseful moments. This book was less exciting and lacked the anticipation for answers. I will probably read the rest of the series and hope the next one gets on track.

Once I got into this one, I couldn't put it down. Constant action and suspense. Couldn't wait to read book #2 in the series!
