Overview

Part two of the literary sci-fi thriller follows a boy and a girl who are caught in a warring town where thoughts can be heard — and secrets are never safe.

Reaching the end of their flight in THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO, Todd and Viola did not find healing and hope in Haven. They found instead their worst enemy, Mayor Prentiss, waiting to welcome them to New Prentisstown. There they are forced into separate lives: Todd to prison, and Viola to a house of healing where her wounds are treated. Soon Viola is swept into the ruthless activities of the Answer, while Todd faces impossible choices when forced to join the mayor’s oppressive new regime. In alternating narratives the two struggle to reconcile their own dubious actions with their deepest beliefs. Torn by confusion and compromise, suspicion and betrayal, can their trust in each other possibly survive?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This grim and beautifully written sequel to Ness's The Knife of Never Letting Go picks up where its predecessor left off and will have readers racing to its painful conclusion. Having escaped from the dystopian, all-male Prentisstown, teenagers Todd and Viola have fled to the city of Haven, only to discover that Prentisstown's mayor, a powerful and charismatic sociopath, has gotten there first, intent on controlling the entire planet. Separated, the friends are caught up on opposite sides of a horrific, morally ambiguous civil war, with Todd coming close to madness. (Viola later reminds Todd, who has undertaken some shocking and cruel responsibilities while working with the mayor, “We all fall but that's not what matters. What matters is picking yourself up again.”) This superb novel, which ends with a gripping cliffhanger that sets up the third Chaos Walking book, uses a brilliant cast of well-developed characters and its singular setting and premise to present a provocative examination of the nature of evil and humanity. This is among the best YA science fiction novels of the year. Ages 14–up. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
Todd and Viola have not found refuge in Haven. "It wasn't Haven at all. It was New Prentisstown" where Mayor Prentiss (now self-proclaimed President Prentiss) is in charge. Todd is thrown into a room at the top of the old bell tower and Viola is sent to a House of Healing to be cared for until her gunshot wound has healed. As the days pass, Todd is drawn into the machinations of Mayor Prentiss as he puts into place the Draconian measures designed to guarantee his control. Resistant at first, Viola reluctantly joins The Answer, a terrorist group lead by Mistress Coyle who will do anything possible to overthrow Prentiss and end his rule. Forced to compromise their beliefs, betrayed by those they come to trust, and suspicious of one another, is it possible for Viola and Todd to remain loyal to themselves and to each other? But Todd will soon discover, when he sees an army of Spackle marching for town, that the end is only the beginning. Read the first book in this trilogy, The Knife of Never Letting Go, before beginning the second. Knowing about the past is essential, such as the Spackle (the natives of the planet, New World) and the NOISE germ that killed all the women and infected the men so that all their thoughts and emotions are broadcast and heard by all. This is a stunning not-to-be-missed science fiction adventure set in an extraordinarily imagined world. Highly recommended. Reviewer: Anita Barnes Lowen
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Todd Hewitt, 13, is locked in a tower in New Prentisstown, a space colony, and separated from Viola, after the dramatic cliff-hanger in The Knife of Never Letting Go (Candlewick, 2008). Tracked down by the manipulative mayor of the all-male community he escaped, he is unaware that Viola is also under guard and recouping nearby. The noise that clatters through men's minds makes it difficult for Todd to keep any secrets about his intentions to find Viola and accompany her on a mission to contact her people, who are on their way to colonize this unsettled and fractured new world. The previous war, which killed most of the women and made slaves of the aboriginal alien Spackles, has pitted the survivors against one another. The "Answer," comprised of women and a few men who lost daughters and mothers in the war, come to blows with the "Ask," the mayor's group of fundamentalist men and their Spackle slaves. The story breaks into alternating narratives, in different fonts, as Todd is forcefully commissioned into the "Ask" and Viola into the "Answer." Their quest to reunite will keep readers focused on their relationship and moral motivation in this graphically violent and dystopian world. Lacking in this episode are lighter moments shared by Todd and his dog, who has been replaced by a less personable horse. Science fiction lovers will be looking for the next installment in this fast-paced and imaginative series.—Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY
Kirkus Reviews
Ness delivers a leaner, meaner narrative in the highly anticipated sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go (2008). At the end of Book One, Todd and Viola found themselves at the mercy of Mayor Prentiss, with Viola near death. Now Todd is forced to join the Mayor's oppressive regime, while Viola is saved and then tutored by the female Healers, led by powerful Mistress Coyle. When the Mayor makes clear his distrust of women, who are impervious to the planet's Noise germ, Mistress Coyle resurrects The Answer, a former terrorist group, which attempts to bomb the Mayor's ruthless Askers into submission. Meanwhile, Todd and Viola are being turned against each other, as each leader tries to persuade the teens that his/her cause is just. Provocative questions about gender bias, racism, the meaning of war and the price of peace are thoughtfully threaded throughout a breathless, often violent plot peopled with heartbreakingly real characters. Newbies will need the first volume to understand this one, and fans are given only a momentary respite as the author continues his tradition of cliffhanger endings. (Science fiction. 14 & up)

    Best Book of the Series

I read this book in two days, and loved every single page of it. There are plenty of twists, and the plot never gets boring. If you read the first book, there is absolutely no reason not to read this one.

    Absolutely stunning

Oh my . . . oh my god. I can't even form coherent thoughts right now. I probably should wait at least a day before I review this book just so I can actually think.

Because the first book was driven, focused, a beautiful telling, but the second book is where Patrick Ness's genius absolutely leaps off the page and grabs you. All those plot twists, character arcs, the meticulous planning of events, they could only be thought up by a genius. I've decided. Ness is a genius. A masterful storyteller. He knows how leave readers dying for the next page, how to make his characters and relationships fester in one's mind until they have to pick the book back up again. He knows people, too. Real people, not just characters slapped on a page. These are real, breathing people with minds and personalities of their own as complex as people I know (heck, even more so). What would this character do in this situation? It seems as if most writers put down what THEY want the character to do to further the plot. What Ness does is listen to the character. These are all actions of the characters, not the writer. I rarely ever see this done well. Perfect, actually.

I can't praise this book highly enough. It made me feel every emotion, and not just feel it, suffer it. This book is TERRIBLY traumatic. I might have been screaming as I was reading it and freaking out those around me. The manipulation, the thought processes, they were all so traumatic because they were so believable and well-written.

I'd also like to point out the absolute flawlessness of Viola and Todd's relationship. It's not even something easily explained, because it, like the characters themselves, is complex and so, so very genuine.

Again, this man is a genius. A storytelling genius. I know I'm gushing, but I can't seem to stop. This trilogy gets inside my head and I can't think of anything else. One of my favorite books, hands down. I don't think I'll ever get over it.

    Even better than the first!

The Ask and the Answer takes the first book and improves on it. The book reminded be of the Hunger Games Series mixed with a little bit of the politics of Animal Farm.

Told in the voices of Todd and Viola, this book is about the happenings in Haven (New Prentisstown) after the Mayor (President)'s unexpected arrival. Viola and Todd are separated, as are the citizens of the city. The story is full of twists, turns, and surprises as the two main characters see the best and worst in their friends and enemies. Lines are blurred and soon it's not so clear who the good guys and the bad guys are anymore. Make sure you also get the first and last books in this series.

    Wow!

A read story of some very well developed good characters (even the animals got me in tears!) And some equally well developed very bad guys. Get the whole series and start with th opening free short story. It got me hooked and the rest kept me on the line. And never disappointed me.

An Unexpected Story Change Keeps the Action Flowing

This book served as a good sequel to "The Knife of Never Letting Go". The action keeps up and an early on development in the story sucks the reader in right away. The emotion in the story harks right back to the first's question of good vs bad, right and wrong. If you loved the first in this series, then this book only makes sense to keep it going and Todd and Viola's story alive. Plus, you'll want to read these books before the movies come out!

    The Ask and the Answer

I have to say that this book was not the greatest book in the series. One reason being that it felt a little repetative but it is worth reading because the book after it, Monsters of Men, turned out to be very good.

    I Also Recommend:

You Asked, So Here's the Answer

"The Ask and The Answer" by Patrick Ness is amazing!

Book two in the "Chaos Walking" Series continues the story of Todd and Viola and their struggle to survive life on the half-civilized New World. The planet that was colonized in an effort to escape Earth, only to fall to chaos when people learned that when on New World men can hear men's thoughts, women can hear men's thoughts, and women's thoughts are silent.

There's now war going on between the men of Prentisstown and the citizens of Haven. Worse, there's a bloody war between the men and the women, with Todd and Viola caught right in the middle of it. All the while the two are worrying about the hundreds of new settlers who are coming, completely unaware of the chaos raging on the planet below.

The book reads like a roller-coaster: fast paced with a lot of twists and turns. Ness' unique writing style turns the story into a stream of edgy action that's packed to the brim with emotion. Every word is straight from the characters head, showing the most brazen and raw sides of humanity.

It's a struggle to survive everyday in a world where just about everyone is an enemy pretending to be your friend. Where everyone is rummaging around in your head, tearing through your thoughts, looking for the slightest thing to use against you. And if if they find it, it could mean the death of everyone and everything you care about.

Watch the drama unfold, as well as a budding relationship between Todd and Viola as they fight humans who could be mistaken for monsters. Or is it monsters mistaken for humans?

    As good as the first!

Usually, the second book in a series can be a let down. The Ask and the Answer may actually be better than the first book. The suspense, the unexpected plot twists, the complex characters all continue to enthrall readers. Can't wait for Monster and Men!

    I Also Recommend:

Great Plot with issues that are meaningful in today's society

This is an incredibly good book that in my opinion is far better than the prequel which was excellent in its own right. Ness combines an absorbing, hugely interesting, and dark plot with two extremely likable and complex characters. This book draws you in and truly makes you care about what happens to the main characters Viola and Todd. It drew me in to such an extent that I would actually get mad when the author put these wonderful characters through such horrible ordeals.

As the story progresses these characters face harsh choices and are forced to confront problems like is terrorism valid if its against a cruel regime, and when do revolutionaries lose there cause and become simple terrorists.

Overall, this is a book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a deep and sometimes harrowing novel that truly strikes you deeply. Agewise this book is probably best for high-school age children as if delves into deeper topics than its predecessor which was probably best for late middle to early high school students. However, adults will probably also enjoy this book for it complex characters and fascinating plotline.

Reviewed by Karin Librarian for TeensReadToo.com

It is important to read the first book in the CHAOS WALKING trilogy, THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO, before beginning THE ASK AND THE ANSWER. Patrick Ness doesn't leave anything out when he begins book two of the trilogy; THE ASK AND THE ANSWER picks up exactly where THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO leaves off.

Todd, after being captured by Mayor Prentiss' men, wakes up with thoughts of Viola. He is beside himself with worry since Viola was dying in his arms when they were captured. Is she dead or alive? No one will tell him, and it is consuming his thoughts.

Thoughts that everyone around him can hear.

While everyone around Todd can hear what he is thinking, he can't hear the thoughts around him. It seems Mayor Prentiss has found a way to stop his Noise and the Noise of his men, thus explaining how Todd and Viola were lured into Haven and captured.

Mayor Prentiss, now calling himself President Prentiss, uses Todd's concern for Viola to control him and force him into working with Prentiss' son, Davy, the one who shot Viola in the first place. Todd can't stand the people around him and feels the tasks assigned to him are barbaric and inhumane.

Fear for Viola's safety prevents him from going against Prentiss and he suffers along with the other townspeople as security gets tighter and more strict every day because of a rebel uprising by a group calling themselves The Answer.

    Then...bombs...begin...to...explode.

Patrick Ness has done it again. THE ASK AND THE ANSWER contains the same heart-pounding excitement as THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO. The reader will experience Todd's internal struggle with every decision he is forced to make in order to survive under Prentiss' control.

You won't be able to stop reading and you'll be disappointed when you get to the end. The third installment in this fantastic trilogy can't come soon enough.
