Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marie Morganelli
Batman discovers Catwoman trying to steal a valuable statue and fighting ensues, Catwoman wins at fisticuffs, and escapes to steal another day. Batman is foiled! Catwoman wins by being selfish, crafty and violent. The language and the message of this story seems all wrong; the first page has references to I-beams and PVC pipe, which, despite the glossary of terms in the back, seem out of place in a book directed at readers between the ages of 9 and 13. This is a chapter book, and vocabulary words are listed at the end, implying that the book may be intended as a teaching tool. However the very weak story merely shows that girls can be strong and successful only when also being deceitful. There are illustrations that lend to the action described in the story, but do nothing to advance it. Exclamations, such as “Whooooosh!” and “Zap!” are prevalent throughout the text and do add to the action-packed feel, but this book still fails to offer much by way of plot or point. Part of the “DC Super Heroes” series. Reviewer: Marie Morganelli, Ph.D.; Ages 8 to 11.
