Overview

During 1967 and 1968 Hunter Davies spent eighteen months with the Beatles at the peak of their powers as they defined a generation and rewrote popular music. As their only authorized biographer, he had unparalleled access—not just to John, Paul, George, and Ringo but also to friends, family, and colleagues. Davies collected a wealth of intimate and revealing material that still makes this the classic Beatles book—the one all other biographers look to. He remained close with the band and had access to more information over the years. This edition brings the story up-to-date with new material on the Beatles's solo careers and lives, as well as the stories of many other people who appear in the book. Drawing on new material from the author's archives and from the Beatles themselves, including a newly discovered song lyric by George Harrison, this edition brings new insights to the Beatles legend.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Originally published in 1968, this is a revised and updated edition of the band's authorized biography. (Oct.)
Library Journal
Since their breakup in 1969, the only band that has managed to become bigger than the Beatles is...the Beatles. Their inestimable number of fans have not been willing to let it be, and the release of the three Anthology double CD sets has put the group right back on top. amazingly, their recordings sell more copies now than at the height of Beatlemania. Written in 1968, this was the only official portrait of the group that was produced with their cooperation. For this revision, Davies has included a new introduction and three updated appendixes of Beatles places, memorabilia, and books. Though works on the band are legion, this remains one of the best. A good book, and well-written

This book is good for two reasons. 1) It was written in the sixties by someone who had access to the band - so he tells you stuff that no other author could know, and 2) he delves into other areas that are not strictly related to the band. For example, the chapter where he looks up Pete Best in 1967 to see what he's been doing is both poignant and funny. And the part where he finds Astrid Kirchherr still mourning Stuart all those years later is touching. It is also the only Beatles book that sits in on an actual writing sessions - when they wrote With A Little Help From My Friends. Priceless stuff!

    I Also Recommend:

    I'll say this:-

I think a lot of us go looking for deeper things in the Beatles lives. Maybe that's not fair to The Fab Four, but that's how fans are.

Most of what could be found here are the same things as in other stories about The Beatles. Not much is new but it's written in a more interesting way.

    The Definitive Beatles' Biography!

This is by far THE best biography ever written on the Beatles. Originally written in 1968, every single Beatles bio that has come since has borrowed judiciously from this book. That is because Hunter Davies had complete access to the band and conducted hundreds of interviews with the fabs, their families, childhood friends and Pete Best. Most of these people are no longer with us and they add to a side of the Beatles legend that shows the group as mere mortals and less of the Gods they viewed as today. He is also the only Beatles¿ author to have written his book while the Beatles were still together at the height of their powers. There is an entire chapter devoted to John and Paul writing songs for the ¿Sergeant Pepper¿s Lonely Hearts Club Band¿ LP. It is fascinating to be a fly on the wall and watch the Lennon/McCartney song writing process as it unfolds. Getting a window into the creative process of one of the best song writing teams of the 20th century is highly entertaining. Nothing is glossed over in this book either. The use of drugs by the band are not hidden and it is easy to read between the lines about Brian Epstein¿s private life. I say skip the more recent books written on the Beatles and go directly to this one. This biography will be the only one you will ever need

    STILL THE BEST

I first got this book from the library when I was twelve back in 1968. I loved it then and I love it now. These four men still speak to me today and they still make me happy. Thanks John, Paul, George and Ringo-and thanks to Mr. Davies for giving us the definitive, non-exploitive story.
