Emma Vaile is your typical high school student with goofy friends, Latin classes, and ghostkeeping. Her boyfriend, the very charming and darn good looking, Bennett Stern is also a ghostkeeper and that is where the trouble is starting. Two ghostkeepers cannot be together without the weaker one losing powers—and Emma is not the weaker of the two. So Bennett is doing all that he can to avoid Emma and it is breaking her heart. Emma's power is also attracting Neos, a former ghostkeeper who has twisted into something demented, something demonic. Neos intends to put an end to Emma and Emma has every intention of eliminating Neos. The Knell, an organization dedicated to ghostkeeping, is supporting Emma's work as are some of her friends who are themselves ghostkeepers. In fact, there is a nice little group of teenage ghostkeepers who share one another's adventures. The style is lighthearted and the romance between Bennett and Emma will entice middle school girls to join in the supernatural fun. Neos is deadly, but the teens are typically irreverent yet focused on the serious task of ridding the world of Neos and his deadly cohorts. Gr 9 Up—In this sequel to Deception (Bloomsbury, 2010), readers find out more about ghostkeeper Emma and meet new team members. Bennett is sent away to keep from losing his powers, which happens to the weaker of the two when ghostkeepers fall in love. Of course, Emma does a certain amount of pining for him, and she feels guilty for Coby's death—which everyone at school seems to blame her for as well, but there is plenty of ghost- dispelling action to keep the plot moving. Simon, the new leader, trains the team hard as they prepare to meet Neos in what turns out to be not the final battle. The complications include the villain dispatching a siren to weaken Emma's resolve and a betrayal among the team, hence the title. In the end, Neos escapes to the Beyond, weakened by the loss of his amulet, and Bennett returns to the museum house. Emma is not sure about the changes in him as he has become addicted to the power-building herb Asarum. The setup is complete for the next round of superghost fighting.     Loved It!

    Ever since reading the promising start to this trilogy, I've been dying to know what will happen to next to Emma, Bennett, and all the other ghostkeepers and their friends, family, and enemies I came to love and even hate in some cases. Thankfully enough Betrayal was a fabulous continuation to this rock solid series. I'll even go so far to say this was even better than the first one- something I thought would be nearly impossible!

    Betrayal starts shortly after Deception ended with Emma picking up the pieces after her beloved friend Coby died under some usual circumstances involving her and her ghostkeeping world. The majority of her friends and schoolmates think she's the one to blame, and that's okay with her, because she does feel at fault and at least she still has Bennett and Natalie to call friends and in Bennett's case something more than just a friend. Plus, she has bigger fish to fry, namely the evil wraith-master Neos and his army who want nothing more than to see her dead. But after a horrifying event everything is left askew in Emma's world. Bennett has pulled away, going so far as to move out of the house, she has a new ghostkeeping team including one hot heated British boy and a snarky teen, and Neos is growing stronger each and every day. Will Emma be able to defeat Neos when she sees him again? And when Emma's parents make their grand return will everything begin to make sense? Better yet will her and Bennett ever reunite? Only time will tell in this deeply thrilling and romantic read that will have nearly any Haunting Emma fan asking for more, more, and more.

    Just like in the first one the characters were my absolute favorite part of Betrayal. Lee Nichols has done such a fantastic job of making each and everyone even more relatable and developed, even going so far to introduce some new ones into the mix. Better yet, I loved what she has done with Emma's character, because not only is she more fierce and kick-butt before, but I truly enjoyed seeing how Emma grows as a ghostkeeper and person in this one. Plus I can't help but love the star crossed she has with a certain boy whose name begins with a B. I also enjoyed seeing her friendship with Natalie continue to develop as well as the intro of the new snarky boy named Lukas.

    Adding to this all, the plot of this one was filled with lots of twists and turns and drama that nearly always had me on the edge of my seat, curious to know what would happen next to Emma and her friends and foes. And when mixed together with Lee's excellent writing and characters, this book was such a fun way to spend a morning.

    Lastly, if you thought Deception had a nail-bitingly bad cliff-hanger ending just wait until she wait Lee has up her sleeve with this one. It'll make you want to pull at your hair and scream, but in the grand scheme of things it was worth it and the perfect way to end the book, and that all I'll say about that.

    In all, if you loved Deception or even just liked it, you sure to love Betrayal. Filled with romance, funny, well developed characters, and twist and turns every step of the way, it's sure have nearly any reader in love with the story at hand!

    And if you haven't read Deception for some reason, be sure to pick it up as well! I promise you won't regret it.

    BookWhisperer Review: Betrayal by Lee Nichols

    The Haunting Emma novels soared with the first debuting book Hauting by Lee Nichols. Betrayal takes off immediately after the ending of Haunting offering a enjoyable mix of romance, suspense, and ghosts. Emma is a very relatable character that continues to expand through each passing book. While this new and extremely dangerous world seems to grow, so does this main character in her experience, knowledge, and power. With Bennett by her side she continues to grow and grasp the sincerity of her place as a Ghostkeeper. For our steamy romance it is heartbreaking to know the cost of a relationship between our two characters, but it builds desperation into the story that will keep readers guessing. After the loss Emma's best friends this book carries a very lonely feel that readers will find tangible throughout the pages. Fortunately, with new characters entering the story she will find herself with many more loved ones to protect.

    Betrayal doesn't start with a whimper, but with a BANG. It's action and angst packed, chock full of ghosts and bad guys (or should I says bad ghosts?) The sequel to Deception gives the reader a better understanding of Emma and her strengths and weaknesses. Unlike some YA romances- when Bennett is MIA for a while, Emma doesn't mope around all the time and go into a sort of stupor (Twilight). She's sad but she still gets up everyday and realizes she has more to live for than just Bennett. The readers get introduced to two more interesting characters and they are at times the comedic relief, along with Natalie of course :) When a story is so depressing you need some laughs or you'll just want to jump out a window (or for those of us who aren't as dramatic, we'll stop reading the book). Overall, it was a pretty good book. My only bone of contention is with Bennett near the end- I won't say exactly what bothered me because that would ruin it for all the people who haven't read the book- but I wished Emma would have slapped some good sense into him and make him listen to her! Hopefully that will happen in the next book. If you read the first book you will definitely enjoy the second.

    GREAT BOOK!!!!

    I picked up the first book in the series in June and I had to wait 9 months for this one to come out and all I can say is it is worth the wait. I read this book in like 2 days. I will say it did have a few slow places but it has alot of introduction of new people and it took a chapter or so for the action to hit you and get you lost in the book again. Still a easy read, you will still find it exciting. I am waiting till the new and final book comes out in December 2011. Yeah that's right I have been waiting a year for the new book, but all good thing are worth the wait.
