Overview

"They say I'm half demon, but I like to think of myself as half human, especially as the demons want me dead."

Charlie Henderson is living a lie. Her real name is Muse and her attempt at a normal life is about to go up in smoke.

When a half-demon assassin walks into her life, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, Muse must return to the one man she hoped never to see again and ask for help. The Prince of Greed isn't known for his charity. The price is high, but the cost could tear her apart.

Trapped between the malevolent intentions of a Prince of Hell, an assassin with ulterior motives and all of demon-kind, Muse must embrace the lure of chaos at her core; the demon inside her, in order to survive.

In this urban fantasy tale, a half-demon's human life is upended when an assassination attempt sends her back to her former lover, a Prince of Hell, for help. "I should have known he'd be trouble as soon as he walked into my workshop, but I couldn't have known he'd be the death of me." Gripping from its first line, this debut novel never slows down, delivering plenty of action as Muse (or Charlie Henderson, her human name) tries to figure out who's trying to kill her and why. Child of a human mother and demon father, she was considered an abomination and "sold at birth as a plaything for lesser demons." Her cruel owner named her Muse as a joke before Akil, a handsome and formidable demon, rescued her. Muse and Akil were lovers, but five years ago, Muse broke away to live independently, working as a blacksmith. But soon after a threatening visit from Stefan—a tall drink of icy water in a red leather coat—Muse's workshop blows up, and the only person she can ask for assistance is Akil. Is Stefan an assassin or someone she can trust? Will Akil provide real help, or does he only want to control Muse—or worse? Though Muse longs for a normal life, she'll need to draw on her demonic half's scorching power to survive her search for answers. DaCosta (Girl From Above, 2015, etc.) skillfully doles out bits of Muse's back story as she gets in and out of trouble and back again, with much deft characterization and thoughtful, lucid consideration of how demons operate fitted in among all the exciting action. The setup is intriguingly psychological, reminiscent of Jessica Jones, the comic-book/Netflix series that uses the mind-control concept to explore abusive relationships. Something like a mistreated and angry inner child, Muse's demon half is the locus of hugely potent, hot, enraged, erotic energy—but it's also her weapon. Realizing that she needs her demon is essential to Muse's survival. Exciting, sexy, psychologically acute, this first entry in a planned series should garner fans eager for the next volume.

This is the first book in a five part series. The last book is about to be released. I read this book awhile ago and fell in love with these characters. Muse is half demon half human. She has been living in Boston working in her metal shop where not only does she make beautiful things with metal, but she can read past events that the metal has come in contact with. Hiding as a human she has kept a very low profile until a beautiful blond in a long red leather coat named Stefan blows up her metal shop and tries to kill her. With no place to go, she seeks refuge from the person she has been hiding from, Akil, The Prince of Greed. Things are not what the seem in this fast paced action packed story where good and evil cross and criss cross again. Muse doesn't know who to trust anymore. Akil, the demon that taught her how to be human or the icy blond Stefan, who not only tried to blow her up, but is more like her that she knows.

Muse is treated like a freak by her family, and a child by the very dangerous man who protects her. While she thinks she has found a niche in which she can lead a life of her own choosing, circumstances are about to blow that false sense of security all to…Hell.  I enjoyed this tale. Fast-paced and full of surprises, it will keep you turning the pages with heart-pounding tension/angst/drama/delight. The characters and situations are well drawn, and the story itself imaginative and unpredictable. Well done.  A complimentary copy provided by author/publisher for an honest review.

I received this book through the first reads giveaway on GR.  First off, the cover is absolutely beautiful and fits Muse perfectly. Everything on the cover has significance in the story.  I fell in love with this book from the beginning. You jump right into Muses life as soon as you start reading, it's extremely easy to follow. Mrs.DaCosta provides info and gives tons of details as each scene unfolds so there isn't any info dumping:). The characters themselves are incredible, there is a ton of detail as to what they look like, both in human and demon form to really give you a good sense of them. Her characters are anything but flat. Muse is a perfectly imperfect character, there is no illusions of her perfection, strength or beauty in this book. She's definitely relateable and has so many dimensions to her, she grows and develops as the story moves along. The insanely attractive and playful leading men are both alphas, but couldn't be more polar opposite of each other.  Beyond The Veil is very well written and balanced. There aren't any inconsistencies in the story, or info dumping, and the plot is very strong. All of Muses relationships develop naturally, we aren't rushed into believing she suddenly falls in love with some guy! The ending has left me wanting more, I'm thrilled the next installment will be out soon:D!  I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys any type of fantasy or is just looking for a different type of story. It's definitely worth reading.

What a waste of potential. Poor writing, constant cliches, and underdeveloped characters turned an interesting concept into a novel barely worth reading. If the poor grammar and punctuation or lackluster descriptions don't throw you out of the story, making you wonder if an editor was actually involved at any point in the publishing process, the fact that many important, action-packed scenes are either skimmed over or skipped altogether likely will. The characters were dull, barely more than concepts, and the protagonist's relationships with them were emphasized before they were even given solid personalities, causing every interaction and emotion to ring hollow. No part of the story ever clicked with me, and as someone who thrives on urban fantasy, that came as a bit of a shock. I suppose I might have been expecting a stronger female lead than I got, and that threw me off. Overall, I was just really disappointed. There were so many promises that were just never delivered upon. I'm still trying to decide whether or not to purchase the rest of the books in the series. I hate to leave a story unfinished, and maybe there will be some improvement in the later installments. Here's hoping!

But I will for this series. I couldn't put it down, the storyteller pulled me in for more. Most of the time I will love a book and start reading the whole series only to have to put it down part way through. I will have to read something else before coming back. Didn't happen this time. I read the whole thing in a week, wanting more. Thank you for the great read!

Well written but not my cup of tea. More for the YA crowd. I think if Stephen hadn't left I'd be more inclined to read on in the series.

Catchy story line; easy to get involved with characters and reads atva good pace. I read the complete series - I would have liked better editing. I never take the time to write reviews so I did enjoy and wish the series would continue.
