Big Rock

Overview

This is the story of a very old rock.
The "'big rock" is a granite boulder that began as molten rock millions of years ago. Through the ages, the mountains above it wore down, the ocean flooded the region, and then new mountains heaved the rock upward, to the surface of a New York State forest.

Overview

This is the story of a very old rock.
The "'big rock" is a granite boulder that began as molten rock millions of years ago. Through the ages, the mountains above it wore down, the ocean flooded the region, and then new mountains heaved the rock upward, to the surface of a New York State forest.
Even though the dinosaurs and other living things have come and gone, the rock remains as a survivor of the Ice Age and silent witness to the earth's continuing evolution. Once you know its story, you will never again overlook another rock like this one.

Traces the origins of a granite rock located near the Adirondack Mountains and describes how it reveals information about the history of the earth.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
This profile of an enormous piece of granite begins with its formation 1,000 million years ago. The author explains how mountains form, are eroded by weather, and have lost chunks to ice-age glaciers which moved and deposited them far from their place of origin.
Children's Literature - Martha Cunningham
Bruce Hiscock, a chemist by training, writes clearly and in an interesting narrative style about geological changes and the history of the planet, from 1000 million years ago to the present, describing monumental shifts in climate and the concomitant alterations in the shape of the earth's surface. There is no index, so this is not so much a research tool as it is an introduction to many topics, such as the Ice Age, glaciers, prehistoric animals, Stone-Age man, fossils, volcanoes, and more. A good teaching tool or family read, it ought to stimulate questions in any curious child's mind. The illustrations are detailed (and include a rough evolutionary timeline). It is set in New York State (the Adirondacks), focussing on one particular boulder, but could be applied to virtually any rocky area. The other books in this series, The Big Tree, The Big River and The Big Storm are advertised on the back cover and look worthy of purchase for a school library as well. They would make a good addition to special-education libraries and thus would cover a larger age group than indicated on the book itself--perhaps to age twelve. 1999 (orig.
