Overview

Cormac Lynch was just a young boy when tragedy struck. Now, to avenge his family's murder, he must become a gunslinger.

Out of a family tragedy in the Dakota Territory grows a man with a reputation for a blazing fast draw. There are those who would ride a hundred miles to watch him shoot it out against the mysterious gunslinger known as Mackle.

Instead, both of them ride to the rescue of Lainey Nayle, whose ranch-and body-are in danger of being taken by force. Now Burnell Lamber and his infamous gang are about to put both reputations to the test.

One of the best Westerns I've read in many years

Without question this is one of the best western novels I have ever read. A painstakingly researched period novel set in the post-civil war west, the story goes from jaw-dropping event to jaw-dropping event. This story will keep you turning pages, with each page packed with emotion and excitement. You will weep, clench your fists in anger, and laugh out loud along with the main characters of this story that are brought to life by the author, Rod Thompson. Can't say enough good things about Mr. Thompson's work except to say, after growing up and loving Louie L'Amour, I find this to be on par with him whom I consider the best western writer of all time. Good job on this one.

This is an exciting read for all

For a first-time published author, Rod Thompson has hit the proverbial home run. It may be a cliche, but his new book, "The Black Hills," belongs on the big screen, featuring the exploits of the likeable, revenge-seeking Cormac Lynch and his fiery, red-headed love, Lainey Nayle. From the opening first few sentences, I found myself hooked on Thompson's tale, set on the prairies and in the mountains of the old Dakota Territory, places the author is obviously familiar with. At just 14, Cormac watches in horror as his mom, dad and sister are brutally attacked by four thugs on horseback. As awful as that day was, it served as a catalyst for how he lives his life in a turbulent and violent period in our history. "The Black Hills" is an exciting read for all who enjoy a great story. I had not read a western before I picked up Rod's book, but I'm now hoping he follows his first book up with more tales about Cormac, Lainey and the times they lived in.

This book needs to get in front of Clint Eastwood!

I challenge everyone reading this review to read the "Look Inside" or the Kindle Sample to see if you too will be captivated by the opening of Rod Thompson's "The Black Hills". I have not read many westerns however found this book very hard to put down. I carried it on my iPhone and iPad so that every spare moment I had, I could read a bit more. He introduces us to Cormac as a young boy who exemplifies the values provided by his loving and caring family. When tragedy strikes, he is left an orphan and must figure out how to survive in a world he is not prepared for. He pulls from his inner strength, determination, loving memories and great companionship from his two best friends, his horses. As the reader we get to know and love Cormie, however the characters he encounters live in awe and fear of him and know him as Mac Lynch. Rod does a beautiful job of intertwining the complexities of human relationships into an action packed, historically worthy, gun shooting, deeply moving love story. This book is movie worthy and needs to get in front of Clint Eastwood! Try it, I bet you can't put it down!

    Six Gun Saga!

Above average western with good characters, plenty of action, and a fast moving plot. I look forward to more from this author.

    Author's note

As the author, I worked hard to make The Black Hills historically correct, include a few surprises along the way and keep it interesting, exciting, and fun to read. Two of the main characters are horses; the hero has a Colt Dragoon on his left hip, and a Smith & Wesson on his right; a sense of humor; and a red-headed Irish girl friend with an unstoppable temper: exciting action for the men, what my editor calls a strong underlying love story for the cowgirls, and fun for all. Two sequels are being planned.

    Amazing Western

This first book by Rod Thompson titled "The Black Hills" is an action packed western with danger in each chapter. History buffs will enjoy the old west realism brought to life by Cormac Lynch's travels from the Dakota Territory to Colorado by way of Texas. I could imagine while previewing this advance copy the movie this book will make as I read the Indiana Jones like adventures mixed with and enchanting love story.
