Overview

Hilary and Mark Bradley are trapped in a web of suspicion. Last year, accusations of a torrid affair with a student cost Mark his teaching job and made the young couple into outcasts in their remote island town off the Lake Michigan coast. Now another teenage girl is found dead on a deserted beach. . . and once again, Mark faces a hostile town convinced of his guilt.

Hilary Bradley is determined to prove that Mark is innocent, but she’s on a lonely, dangerous quest. Even when she discovers that the murdered girl was witness to a horrific crime years earlier, the police are certain she’s throwing up a smoke screen to protect her husband. Only a quirky detective named Cab Bolton seems willing to believe Hilary’s story.

Hilary and Cab soon find that people in this community are willing to kill to keep their secrets hidden—and to make sure Mark doesn’t get away with murder. And with each shocking revelation, even Hilary begins to wonder whether her husband is truly innocent. Freeman’s first stand-alone thriller since his Stride novels is a knockout.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
At the start of this solid stand-alone from Freeman (Immoral and three other titles in his Duluth, Minn., crime series), former high school teacher Mark Bradley is on vacation in Florida with his wife, Hilary. The previous year, accusations of an affair with a female student ruined Mark's teaching career in Wisconsin's Door County, where he and Hilary had moved to escape Chicago. Even though Tresa Fischer insisted that her crush on Mark was nothing more than that, the tight-knit community shunned the Bradleys and labeled Mark a predator. When 16-year-old Glory, Tresa's wild-child younger sister, turns up dead on a beach near Mark and Hilary's hotel, Mark becomes the number one murder suspect. Det. Cab Bolton, who isn't one to jump to conclusions, travels from Florida to Wisconsin to unravel Mark—and Glory's—complicated lives. Well-developed characters and a thrilling climax help compensate for a plot that relies on too many coincidences. (Apr.)

This is a super police procedural-amateur sleuth thriller

In Door County, Wisconsin, teacher Mark Bradley is accused of an affair with a teenage student Tresa Fischer. Both deny the accusations though the pupil admits she has a crush on Mark. He is fired as the townsfolk figuratively inscribe a P on his forehead for "predator". His wife Hilary believes him.

Tresa's sister Glory is drunk when she sees Mark on a Florida beach alone at three in the morning. She offers her body to him, but instead he tells her he is taking her home. Later that same morning, Glory's corpse is found near the hotel where the Bradleys are staying. The police suspect he killed his lover's sibling in a passion rage. Already irate over the injustice he suffered; Mark is stunned when he realizes he is the only person of interest. While Hilary investigates to prove her spouse's innocence, Florida Detective Cab Bolton tries to break the suspect, but begins to believe the wife's dangerous theory even as her faith in Mark is beginning to shatter.

This is a super police procedural-amateur sleuth thriller starring a powerful cast and loaded with twisting action from start to finish. Readers will believe Mark is innocent but like his wife soon will wonder if he is guilty of homicide and sex with a minor. Coincidence like being alone on a Naples beach at three in the morning propels the tension and sense of guilt so that readers will appreciate this taut thriller.

If you are a fan of Brian Freeman you won't be disappointed!

I have read all of Brian Freeman's books and have been looking forward to this one coming out. When I purchased the book I was a little sad that it wasn't a Stride novel but was eager to read it anyway. It has great characters, another great setting and a wonderful read. Freeman continues to amaze me with his words. I read the book in about a day and a half and now must wait anxiously for his next book to come out. If you've never read any of his books, this is a great place to start! ~Kim~

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Joe Barrett, so

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Joe Barrett, so my review is based on that version.

Mark Bradley and his wife Hilary think they have it all. They have finally found love. They both have jobs they love, a new house they love, and they think all is going well for them. That is until a mother reads her daughter’s diary and finds that her daughter has written some very sensual things in there. Things about sex with her teacher, Mark Bradley. Then it is trial by gossipy neighbors and co-workers. Hilary thinks she knows her husband better than to suspect him of doing the deed with a young girl and decides to stand by him as he faces ridicule, loses his teaching job, and is ostracized by his so-called friends.

On a vacation to Florida to watch a dance competition, a young girls turn up dead on the beach outside of Mark and Hilary’s hotel. Unfortunately for Mark, not only does the girl turn out to be the sister of the girl he is accused of having an affair with, but he is the prime suspect. When Mark and Hillary return to the small town where they live, they will find out that they are no longer welcome. People believe Mark is guilty and want him gone, permanently.

As the investigation unfolds, Mark starts behaving erratically. Hillary starts to have doubts about her husband and wonders if there is something else he isn’t telling her.

This was a very suspenseful murder mystery. Right up until the ending, I still couldn’t decide if Mark was a lying, cheating jerk or just a guy suffering from ‘outsider’ syndrome. If you have ever lived in a small town you know what that is. The new people are never to be trusted, they are never allowed into inner circles, and are always the first to have fingers pointed in their direction when things go wrong.

This was my first novel by author Brian Freeman and it won’t be my last. I really enjoy a story that keeps you guessing right up until the end.

    The Narration Review
This audiobook was narrated by Joe Barrett. I enjoyed his calm narration through most of the book and really enjoyed it when things started heating up and getting exciting. It was like he was right there with me in the suspense department. When you read a book and it comes to the suspenseful part you tend to read a little faster until you are almost ripping the pages as you turn them. That is what I felt like Joe was doing. It felt like he was so gripped by the story that he was feeling all the emotions that I was feeling and couldn’t wait to take me with him on the ride.

A psychological thriller done by someone who knows how to write one

Here's a psychological thriller done by someone who knows how to write one. While basically a story of a man and wife, the plot bleeds out to include a detective and and CSI analyst, some troubled teenagers, and a terrible tragedy from the past. The tragedy, portrayed in the breathtaking prologue, reaches lethal tentacles into the future and threatens almost everyone involved.
Mark Bradley is having a tough time. He and his wife, Hillary, moved to an idyllic island in rural Door County, northern Wisconsin, from a Chicago suburb to live on their salaries as teachers and raise a happy family. Mark, however, was accused of sexual harassment when the mother of shy teenaged student, Tresa, read the torrid accounts of an inappropriate affair in Tresa's diary. Tresa insisted her writings were all fantasy, but Mark was fired anyway and has been out of a job for a year. His wife, Hillary is still a dance coach at the high school, but her reception by the locals has become increasingly chilly.
Mark accompanies his wife and her dance students to Florida for a competition. It's supposed to be a relaxing getaway, but Mark is accosted on the beach by Tresa's younger sister, Glory. When Glory is found dead, a witness is found that saw Mark kissing Glory very late at night. He insists they didn't kiss, and that he didn't kill the girl. Hillary wants to believe him, but she's exhausted from standing by him during the ordeal of the past year. And she's not quite sure he's telling the truth.
Cab (Born In One) Bolton, the unusual detective assigned to the case, fights against his attraction to the lovely CSI analyst, Lala. Like Hillary, he doesn't know who to believe. But he's Mark's only hope. And he carries a horrific secret of his own from the past.
