Overview

Thirty years ago, in a facility buried beneath a vast Wyoming emptiness, an experiment gone awry accidentally opened a door.

It is the world's best-kept secret—and its most terrifying.

Trying to regain his life in the Alaskan wilds, ex-con/ex-cop Travis Chase stumbles upon an impossible scene: a crashed 747 passenger jet filled with the murdered dead, including the wife of the President of the United States. Though a nightmare of monumental proportions, it pales before the terror to come, as Chase is dragged into a battle for the future that revolves around an amazing artifact.

Allied with a beautiful covert operative whose life he saved, Chase must now play the role he's been destined for—a pawn of incomprehensible forces or humankind's final hope—as the race toward Apocalypse begins in earnest.

Because something is loose in the world.

And doomsday is not only possible . . . it is inevitable.

Like a Kurt Vonnegut Action Novel

I really enjoyed this tale with a new action hero Travis Chase who is a mix of John McClane meeting Harry Bosch. Chase is someone who did something wrong and ended up spending twelve years in prison. When he gets out he is offered a position in his brother's computer company but instead decides to go someplace where nobody knows him so he can be alone and find himself. He ends up in Alaska hiking through sections of Alaskan wilderness. While on one of these hikes a 747 jet crashes close to him. Travis goes to investigate.

He finds everyone aboard dead but notices that among them is the first lady, who has scrawled a note. The note tells him to kill the people that did this as a matter of natural security and to call a phone number and let "Tangent" know what happened.

The bad guys that did this have apparently taken a father and daughter prisoner and are torturing the daughter in front of the father to get him to tell them something. His willpower is slowly fading and Travis decides to take aciton to start killing the bad guys and try to rescue the two people. This leads to battles with numerous bad guys like a Die Hard movie.

We find out that everything is related to an underground desert base controlled by Tangent, a covert government group. In that base an experiment with ion colliders has created a "breach" in maybe the fabric of time and space. Through the breach come different "entities" which are objects with different types of powers. The most powerful object is the object known as Whisper. I kind of likened the objects to the various mutants of the X-Men and The Whisper as being like Magneto.

The book moves as breakneck speed and little by little we learn what Travis had done to land him in prison We also learn that Whisper seems to know all that will happen regardless of whether the predictable or unpredictable is done. Everything that happens seems to center around Travis and it is up to him to defeat the bad guys and Whisper or the world could face dire consequences. Virtually impossible to put this book down! Highly recommended.

    Into "The Breach"

This was the first book by Patrick Lee I've read and I will definately look for others books by Lee. Lots of plot twists including the ending. Like most thrillers, there are some very dificult situations from which there seems to be no escape. Most are plausible. Characters and scenes are developed well. Not easy to stop reading at any time.

this is a terrific action-packed thriller with a science fiction time paradox twist

A former Minnesota cop who became a convict due to a crime of passion, Travis Chase served his time and left the Lower Forty-eight to start over in the Yukon though he is unsure what he will do. Hiking along in the remote wilderness, Travis comes across a wrecked jet that for the most part stayed intact. Shockingly, the crew and passengers did not die in the crash, but from assassinations; the dead died from bullet wounds to the head.

He finds a secret compartment containing one passenger who died from the loss of blood, but left a note explaining what happened. Travis cannot fathom why the First Lady was in an unmarked plane flying over the Alaskan wilderness. In her note she gives gruesome instructions to kill all involved even those on our side. However, he disobeys her orders to kill all when he sees the torture of two elderly people even if worldwide destruction may be caused by them. Travis assumes there is another way to save the world from the maniac using a gizmo that grants wishes. If he had the otherworldly artifact he might choose the daughter of a scientist Paige Campbell as his though he admits to himself she can probably take him; but first Tangent top secret department has enlisted Travis to help guard the portal that enables these odd gadgets to come to earth from a technology light-years beyond ours.

Over the top of the North Pole, this is a terrific action-packed thriller with a science fiction time paradox twist. Fans need set aside as the story line is faster than a speeding bullet, light and Indiana Jones. Readers who appreciate action to the nth degree with a body count that is beyond the troposphere will want to go "North to Alaska, north the rush is on".

Great Read! On a whim, I decided to try this triology, and was pleasantly surprised. The storyline held my attention so much, that I finished the triology within days. I highly recommend this to others who like to read suspense mixed in with the strang and unusual.

Recommended - Fast paced action with SciFi background

This is the first book of a trilogy, and I recommend them all. If possible, read them in order. The characters are interesting and the story lines keep moving - quickly. It is possible that there is too much violence for some readers, but I found the book(s) fast paced and they definitely kept my interest.

    Read This Book!

"The Breach", "Ghost Country", and "Deep Sky" deliver an excellent sci-fi/thriller trilogy. Fast-paced from start to finish. Characters you care about. Patrick Lee has a writing style that not only keeps you interested in what's going on now, but makes you hungry to find out what's going to happen later. I could say more about each book, but suffice to say that, if you're into intrigue, with some science fiction, get these books.

Never heard of Patrick Lee before, but I'm sure glad I have. Haven't finished this book yet, but already bought the other two in the trilogy. Action is fast-paced and relentless. Characters are worth your time. Hard to put it down, but I gotta sleep sometime. Get this one.
