Overview

In the secret heart of London, under the cover of endless darkness, the Nightside caters to anyone with any unusual itch that needs to be scratched. But enter at your own risk. The party animals who live here may be as inhuman as their appetites...

My name is John Taylor. The Nightside is my home. I didn't plan it that way. In fact, I once tried to get away. But I came back. And now it seems I'm settling down, with a full-time job (in addition to my work as a very private eye) as Walker-the new Voice of the Authorities in the Nightside-and a wedding in the offing.

I'm marrying the love of my life, Suzie Shooter, the Nightside's most fearsome bounty-hunter. But nothing comes easy here. Not life. Not death. And for certain, not happily-ever-after. Before I can say "I do," I have one more case to solve as a private eye-and my first assignment as Walker.

Both jobs would be a lot easier to accomplish if I weren't on the run, from friends and enemies alike. And if my bride-to-be weren't out to collect the bounty on my head...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Green’s superlative 12th Nightside novel (after 2011’s A Hard Day’s Knight), set in a world “hidden deep in the dark and dangerous heart of London,” ratchets up the stakes for series protagonist John Taylor in an intricate and action-filled plot that seamlessly blends crime and the supernatural. Taylor has been designated the new “Walker,” the public face of the rulers of the Nightside, so he begins wrapping up his personal investigation business. Then an anonymous e-mail sends Taylor to the Ball of Forever; the guest list is limited to immortals, but a killer manages to strike one down. As Taylor hunts the culprit, he learns that a powerful entity seeks to destroy the entire Nightside. The pace never flags and the sardonic Chandleresque narration (”She didn’t lose her innocence; she threw it away with both hands, first chance she got”) is perfectly suited to the Nightside’s fantastical mean streets. Kirkus Reviews
Another in Green's urban-fantasy noir Nightside series (A Hard Day's Knight, 2011, etc.)—purportedly the last. Nightside is the uncanny underside of London, inhabited by a bewildering variety of supernatural beings, where it's perpetually 3 AM and you can get anything you want, and also things you decidedly don't want. Our narrator, multitalented PI John Taylor, now appointed Walker (think marshal of Dodge City) by the Authorities, decides to take one last case before marrying his sweetheart, bounty hunter Suzie Shooter. He receives a supernatural warning of shenanigans to come at the Ball of Forever, where Nightside's immortals gather to sneer and preen at one another. Green introduces us to the attendees in what isn't too much more than an admittedly inventive parade of otherworldly weirdos. Eventually, somebody murders the widely despised King of Skin ("You're Only Immortal As Long As You Don't Die") and also Frankenstein's Bride. The Bride is soon back on her feet after a jolt of electricity, but King of Skin is indeed permanently dead. The new Walker soon wraps up the mystery, but then a godlike entity called the Sun King, a charismatic hippie who disappeared back in the 1960s, shows up to declare that he'll bring devastating, cleansing sunlight to the Nightside, whose denizens are aghast. Worse, the Sun King appears to have been amplified by superpowered entities from another dimension. What follows is another dramatic, inventive and highly selective orgy of murder and mayhem. Can Walker prevail against odds when almost everybody wants him dead? And will he get to the church on time? Despite a few blips, a hugely satisfying windup for one of fantasy's most memorable constructs.

Review Of The Bride Wore Black Leather (Nightside Series Book #12) By Simon R. Green

I want to start off by saying I had no idea when I started reading this book that it was number 12 in an existing series. When I started reading it there were really great aspects of this story but at times I really was so confused by certain things and wanted to give up reading it. With that being said, I do have to say that I really enjoyed this book. It was like nothing I had ever read before and it kept me coming back to it time and time again. There were some really original ideas and characters in this book and I liked how it was told from the male point of view for a change. John Taylor is a private eye who has recently been appointed the new Walker of the Nightside. This book starts off with John Taylor settling his affairs before his upcoming wedding to Suzie Shooter a.k.a. Shotgun Suzie (who is a feared bounty hunter in the Nightside). John wants to end his private eye career with one last great case. In finding this one case John sets in motion a chain of events that send him on a man hunt, as well as, on the run for his very life. John has to decide who he can trust, but in The Nightside, that is easier said than done. He has to chase down a murderer, while dodging some very terrifying citizens of The Nightside and have it all said and done by tomorrow which just so happens to be his wedding day. There is SO MANY kool things I want to say but I so don't want to ruin this book for anyone. Simon gave very descriptive details. I often found myself trying to visualize the world of the Nightside in my minds eye. Not only did this story have great characters, it had really great sidekicks and gadgets. I would so love to own John Taylor's white trench coat (but maybe in black....lol). I so wish I had the first 11 books on hand so I could dive right into them this very minute. There was never a dull moment to this book. On a scale from 1-10 I give The Bride Wore Black Leather an 8. I wanted to give it a 10 but because this was book 12 and I was a little confused I feel I can't give it the rating I think it deserves if I had read the whole series. If you love alternate realities, immortal beings, crime solving, or a good old fashion chase then The Bride Wore Black Leather is the book for you. If you are a fan of The Nightside Series I urge you to run don't walk to the bookstore and pick yourself up a copy of this book. If you haven't read this series and don't mind a little confusion then you also need to get this book. Pick up a copy and start rooting for John Taylor to start kicking some butt.

A solid read sorry to see this series end

This novel tied up many loose ends though there are still plenty of mysteries left, it is the Nightside afterall. A good read, a decent conclusion though not my favorite of this series would recommend though if you like the series... still curious about some things this book didn't address. Series still feels a bit undone. Hope it means more Nightside stories even if they're shorts.

Solid Ending to an Excellent Series... but a Rough Start

The Bride Wore Black Leather Simon R Green – The Last of the Nightside Novels Con(-): 119 pages in- well over one third into the last of the Nightside novels -and the reader must pause to realize his reward has been a rather wearisome and long-winded re-cap followed by an uninteresting side story. Con: The second third- and yes, literally the second third, from pg 119 to ~238 –the novel labors to build the climatic last adventure of the infamous private eye and newly appointed enforcer of the Authorities, John Taylor. The main story plot is revealed (finally) and I found it deflatingly disappointing- especially since the only thing the first 119 pages had going for it was the excellent use of foreshadowing that really got me hyped over the newest and greatest threat ever to befall the Nightside. The main story turned out to be mediocre at best, barely achieving what I’d consider to be the benchmark for a middle-of-series tale; and falling far short of what you’d expect from an epic final novel to one of the greatest fantasy/mythological series I’ve ever read. Pos: If you’ve hung in there to the last third of the book (it’s not much of a reward at this point but…) the story finally lights off and keeps a great page-turning pace until a slightly cheesy but warm ending. Pos(+): The last paragraph of the book ends the series very satisfactorily; and in fact, I’d go as far as to say the only book series that had a more appropriate, a more de rigueur, ending was Stephen King’s Dark Tower Series.

    Another hit for Simon Green

A new Walker and new and improved hero? The man im the spooky trench coat is back in Nightside spreading his brand of odd justice with his bes girl by his side. As with other Simon Green stories there are a few twists and turns. A very fine read.
