Overview

As long as there is life, there is hope

After Mama is taken away by the Nazis, Riva and her younger brothers cling to their mothere's brave words to help them endure life in the Lodz ghetto. Then the family is rounded up, deported to Auschwitz, and separated. Now Riva is alone.

At Auschwitz, and later in the work camps at Mittlesteine and Grafenort, Riva vows to live, and to hope - for Mama, for her brothers, for the millions of other victims of the nightmare of the Holocaust. And through determination and courage, and unexpected small acts of kindness, she does live - to write the unforgettable memoir that is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

    LOVE..LOVE..LOVE!!!

I've read this book about about 6 times since I was in Middle School, and 10 years later it STILL makes me cry. This is one of the best stories of strength I have ever read.

    Amazing!!!!!!!!:)

The cage by Ruth Minsky Sender, is a heartbreaking story. I absoulutely loved this book! It was inspiring, deep, and amazing. She fought for her family ( mother and her brothers), she even protected those she barely knew, her friends, and her dignity. I felt she included so many details that i could imagine each word i read. Ruth's true story made me cry and cry and cry... and at the end, i smiled. She lived to have her own family of kids and a husband. She deserves praise and applause!

    Pure Luck

Elie Wiesel, Thomas Blatt, Filip Muller, David Faber, and Viktor Frankl were holocaust survivors. Over 6 million innocent lives were taken during the World War II by the Nazis all over Europe. But these people were the few who decided to write about their experiences in the genocide. The Cage is about a holocaust survivor, Ruth Minsky Sender, and her side of the story. I thought this book was mediocre because I had a notion that Riva was very "lucky" compared to other concentration camp survivors. I was looking forward to more of a trill, suspense, and more brutal struggles. There were indeed, trill, suspense and struggles, just not enough for me. I felt the main character, Riva, was a strong and caring. She had to step up to the plate and take care of her brothers through the ghetto. Have you ever felt like you needed someone to be there for you when you were discouraged or struggling? I think the author is trying to communicate to her audience to stick together to your close ones during complicated situations, and by doing that, you will have support, encouragement, and of course, company. I remember during PE, we were running a large distance and I was about to give up towards the end but my friends talked me through to go on, and finish. "I ask not for a lighter burden, but for broader shoulders," a Jewish proverb. I say this is a good read but not a great one.

One of the better Holocaust accounts.

I thought it was a good book. I'm assuming it's a memoir of the author's life (once I read her biography on Wikipedia). This book sounds vaguely familiar and I believe I have read it before a long time ago but nevertheless I thought I might as well read it again. It's a small book with less than 200 pages and I was so interested and engrossed in it that it took me several hours to finish it. I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next, I wanted to know how she managed to survive through the entire ordeal and still manage to keep hoping and to keep living. Riva is one of the most strongest characters I have ever read so far.

I admired Riva for having to take care of her brothers through the hardships of living in the ghetto. Then having to be forcefully separated, she had to survive on her own and she never lost hope. It's as if she drew strength from losing her mother to give her the will to stay alive. Although the situation was always bleak and survival is never guaranteed, it was amazing to see how Riva managed to continue to hope even in the face of this kind of adversity.

There were a few things with this novel that I did not quite agree with. First I noticed it's somewhat catered to children and I sort of have to wonder about that. I realized children should be taught about this moment in history but I think this book really should be catered towards teens as this story surrounded Riva in her teenage years. It just seems to make more sense. Also, I found the flow of the narration to be a little jumpy throughout the first half of the book. It was first one major event then it just skips directly to another there wasn't real flow to put the two together into one smooth transition, it felt almost as if it was the writing was rather haphazard.

Overall though, a touching Holocaust story and not one to be missed. The story tells you that without hope, there really is nothing to live for and it's a lesson to learn for everyone in future generations to come.
