Overview

Two boys, separated by the canyons of time and two vastly different cultures, face the challenges by which they will become men.
Coyote Runs, an Apache boy, takes part in his first raid. But he is to be a man for only a short time.
More than a hundred years later, while camping near Dog Canyon, 15-year-old Brennan Cole becomes obsessed with a skull that he finds, pierced by a bullet. He learns that it is the skull of an Apache boy executed by soldiers in 1864. A mystical link joins Brennan and Coyote Runs, and Brennan knows that neither boy will find peace until Coyote Runs' skull is carried back to an ancient sacred place.
In a grueling journey through the canyon to return the skull, Brennan confronts the challenge of his life.

Finding a skull on a camping trip in the canyons outside El Paso, Texas, Brennan becomes involved with the fate of a young Apache Indian who lived in the late 1800s.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A psychic link is forged between a 19th-century Apache boy and Brennan, a 15-year-old on a camping trip who undertakes a grueling journey. ``Terse language keeps the story moving at a brisk pace,'' PW commented. Ages 12-up. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
Cornered in a canyon during his first coming-of-age horse raid, a young Apache brave, Coyote Runs, is shot execution-style by soldiers from Fort Bliss. One hundred years later, Brennan Cole discovers a skull with a hole through its forehead in a canyon where he's been camping and becomes obsessed by the need to find out the who, what, and why of the skull. With the help of a pathologist, his high-school biology teacher, and someone from the Western Historical Archives in Denver, Brennan pieces the story together. The bond between the two boys, a century apart in time but so close in age and spirit, grows stronger as Brennan now searches for the final answer: why is Coyote Runs' spirit so restless, and what does it want of him? Brennan's realization that only when Coyote Runs' haunting and haunted soul is at peace will his own disturbed self find peace climaxes in his own coming-of-age challenge. Paulsen involves readers so deeply in the lives of both characters, telling the story in alternating chapters marked by the cadence and language distinctive to each boy and his time and place, that the whole becomes a compelling and dramatic experience that is powerful stuff. Although this is, at times, overwritten and affected--almost a parody of Hemingway--it will be new and unforgettable to today's readers. --Marjorie Lewis, Scarsdale Junior High School, NY

    I recommend this book

I recommend this book if you like suspense/action/mystery.It's about two kids, one from the past and one from the present, they have a connection. The kid from the past talks to the one from the present and has him bring his skull to his favorite. His favorite place is very high in a canyon. This is a very good book because it shows teamwork between two similar kids.

I hated this book. To me, it's just about a kid who's obsessed with a skull. I would never recommend it.

    Well Written

Canyons is about Brennan, a boy who goes on a camping trip with his mom, her friend Bill, and his youth group. He finds a skull under his sleeping mat. When he goes to a former teacher's house, one of the teacher's friends has a bunch of recorded history on the Apache tribe, AND Brennan finds out that the skull has a history of its own.

The first chapters switch on and off with Brennan and an Indian boy named Coyote Runs, who goes on his first raid. Brennan lives in this century, and Coyote Runs is from the 19th century. This made it confusing at the beginning, but it was very good at the end.

I would definitely recommend the book to people who like historic/realistic fiction and adventure.

This book is not great, but pretty good. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a break from the great big science fiction novels you may have been reading lately. This book doesn't take very long to read, which I like. Another quality is that it doesn't take long for the storyline to get up and moving either. The disappointment I had from reading this book was that it didn't live up to my expectations after reading Gary's other books. In particular the books that have to do with a teenage boy that is having problems in his homelife that is challenged mentally and physically. This fiction was still a fun read, but didn't quite have all the ingredients to make it a great novel. Still, I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a short, exciting read.

    A reviewer

This is a pretty good book, but I would of liked more action. It is a mystery and has lots of surprises. I like mysteries and action and this book has some of both. The book switches between two stories that are related. I like reading about one story instead of switching back and forth. The chapters in the book are short, and don't seem to have a lot of content. The book is enjoyable to read because it has you guessing what is going to happen next. The book may seem inspiring because the main character does some incredible things. I think you will probably enjoy rading the book. There are lots of things going on that you may be able to relate too. The book also captures your attention and makes you want to keep reading.

    Definately Worth Reading

This book was definately worth reading! I enjoyed it a lot. If you like books that are adventurous then I would reccomend it! At the beginning the story it starts out flat and there isn't too much to it. But keep reading and it gets oh so much better! Brennan is a fourteen year old boy that goes on a camping trip with his mother, and her boyfriend. He sleeps a little further away from them and the youth group and stumbles across a skull. He is on a mission to know what the history behind the skull is and he isn't giving up! This book is wonderful, I think most will like it!

hi yah! The book called Canyons by Gary Paulsen is a very enjoyable book. My friends and I like this book that we nearly finished it in about a week or less! You might think that at the beginning the book might be a little dull, but during the middle of the story its very exciting, that u wanted to keep on reading. This is a book that talks about a boy named Brennan (14yr old boy) who found a skull while he is camping on a trip near Dog Canyon. I love this book, that i think everyone might enjoyed it!

    Canyons by Gary Paulson

I enjoyed this book although it was pretty easy to read and not very challenging. The book switches back and forth between a boy named Brian living in El Paso and a young indian boy that lived long before Brian. The book then blends the two stories into just one, where Brian discovers something related directly to the indian boy.

    Both of two worlds

At first the book was just a little consusing but after reading it for a while it got quite interesting. It starts out with a young indian boy travling then it shifts to a boy at the modern times. He finds the skull of the indian boy and keeps its not nowing it was his skull in the time before.

    Half and Half

This book is Half and Half. The plot is confusing and you will probably get lost if you even miss a couple sentences. Its an intresting idea of what Paulson wanted to express but it book could have been done in a better way. The exciting part of the book is in the end and some in the middle. I would recommend this book for those who want to read a book about sprital bonds but thats about all this book has to offer.

    great book over all

The way this book was written, was not boring one bit. It was very suspenseful all the way through. The plot, on the other hand, was a little bit confusing, at least in the beginning Gary Pulsen¿s writing creativity has always been great, but he has not made a theme like this in a long time. The book had two tales closely intertwined; yet taking place a hundred years apart. All the pieces of the puzzle started to fit together on the journey through the canyon. The story is about two boys who are coming of age to become men. Both are separated by a canyon of time. Hold on reader, its quite a journey.

    It was really, really, boring!!!

Well, I thought that it was really boring when I had to read it for a school project. It was really slow and it didn't really have any pinicles in the plot. It didn't even have a climax part. To me, this book could of used some work and all my friends think the same. I gave it a three because I didn't like the book but I thought that it was ok... So, I recomend that you get this book if you have to or if you really enjoy Gary Paulson books...
