This is a gem. While it is set in Cleveland it is less about the City than about its people. A down and outer from Pittsburgh comes to Cleveland in search of work and some modicum of success. Instead he finds himself and the values he thought he had lost.

I read the book after seeing the play that was adapted from this short story, so my reading was inevitably influenced by that fact. As a short story, the tale was a nice contemporary riff on the classic Dickens' novella,' The Christmas Carol.' The play adaptation, of which Les Roberts heartily approved, added the kind of depth that the short story form is seldom able to provide. It's a good tale to read on a cold winter's evening with a cup of cocoa right after you've decorated your tree.
