Overview

In a faraway medieval realm, Manfred, an arrogant and evil prince, rules with an iron fist. Banishing his wife to the castle dungeon, he confines -- and plans to wed -- the lovely Isabella, fiancee of his recently deceased son. The prince's plans are foiled, however, when a well-meaning peasant helps the young woman escape through the castle's underground passages. Grisly, supernatural events further aid in fulfilling a prophecy that spells doom for the prince and justice for Isabella's rescuer and rightful heir to the throne. One of the first and greatest of Gothic novels, this thrilling tale ranks among the most influential books in literary history. Serving as the model for plots, characterizations, settings, and tone for hundreds of successors, The Castle of Otranto abounds with colorful scenes, adventure, suspense, and inexplicable phenomena.

Edited with an introductrion by W.S. Lewis and Explanatory notes and notes on the text by Joseph W. Reed, Jr.

    I Also Recommend:

    First true gothic romance....

This novel is hilarious. Not intentionally, of course. No, it's meant to be quite dramatic and thrilling, as any good gothic romance should be, but with all the convoluted relationships, intermingled plotlines, and conveniently placed falling helmets, the end result is rather silly. Dramatic and thrilling, certainly, but also undeniably silly. I still can't quite believe it was required reading when I was a high school freshman, but it made for a unique English class experience. The Castle of Otranto is not for everyone, but if you have an interest in the history of gothic novels or just want a zany, unusual read, you might consider picking this up.

    Not my favorite by far

As one of the most famous Gothic novels, I expected much more, but the flat characters and the way in which particular happenings were described belittled the story and made it seem rather silly. I would describe it as a mix between Hamlet and Beowulf. Other Gothic Romances are much more sucessful.

    Excellent Gothic

Horace Walpole is said to be the father of Gothic. I can certainly see how The Castle of Oranto could inspire a many a Gothic Novelists. My only gripe of this book would be of its brevity.

    I Also Recommend:

If it's good enough for Jane ....

If you want to get an idea of what titillated readers like Jane Austen then delve into this book. This tale is sure to make modern readers stop and gape at the over dramatic moments of greed, horror, and ghosts but none the less it's still an intriguing look into a different time period in our literary past. Although, if while reading it you can't help but overlay a scene out of one of Shakespeare's comedies, falsetto voices et al .... don't worry your not alone.

One of the Forfathers of Gothic Lit

The story of course is a bit silly, but if you love Gothic Literature, it's fun to explore it's origins.
