Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Keeney
At a guided reading level of "R," this manuscript would be perfect for a child in the intermediate grades. Sarah Levete engages readers with a bright and vibrant color scheme, the result of dozens of expertly sized and placed photographs. She opens with a table of contents that includes thirteen evenly spaced chapters. Each respective section results in a two-page spread that focuses on a specific weather-related topic. Some of these contents include "Deadly hurricanes," "Drying Up," "El Nino and his sister," and "Life in danger." Levete explains the difference between weather and climate while shedding light on the severe impact that human actions have on current global conditions. Many of Levete's topic choices are unsurprising, such as global warming, melting glaciers, and the increasing deadliness of hurricanes. Levete, however, also tackles less common subject matter, such as Australia's desalination plants, La Nina, and some countries' reliance on monsoon rains for successful crops. A glossary and "Further Information" page conclude the manuscript, creating a nonfiction paperback that kids will actually want to read. This manuscript is part of the six-title "Protecting Our Planet" series. Reviewer: Jennifer Keeney
