Overview

Domination. Desire. Destiny.

He rules a future in which women are helpless, obedient, and always willing. She comes from a past in which a woman's strength, brains, and courage are unquestioned. The challenge between them is timeless.

Secret Service agent Tessa Camen took a bullet meant for the president. She regains consciousness three hundred years in the future on a spaceship, naked in the arms of Kahn, a fierce warlord from the planet Rystan. He's been expecting her. Tessa was whisked forward in time because her fighting abilities include a psychic talent like none other. Only she can defeat an enemy who threatens Earth. The fate of her home hangs in the balance. Once again, she's called on to serve and protect her nation.

In Kahn's world, women are meant to be ruled but also protected. He can seduce Tessa, but can he own her heart and mind? Can he put aside his beliefs about women to help her train for a brutal intergalactic test, The Challenge? If she loses, so does Earth.

Tessa and Kahn are caught in a war of wills set in a future where survival is a skill, power is an aphrodisiac, and love is a challenge that could destroy everything they cherish.

I mostly enjoy historical romances, but on a whim got this book, wow was I surprised! Couldn't put it down. I really liked the tension between the two main characters. And even though the 'Challenge' was the main focus her transportation, the book went so much further...would recommend this to anyone...A must read!

5 Star SFR  I am thrilled this is now in ebook form. This is a five star read for me because the world building is excellent, it launches an amazing  series, and I love the heroine. It is also funny.  I always recommend this book to newbies to the romance and sfr genres because it is compelling, fast paced, and a lot of fun. I have reread it many times and highly recommend this book.  I was given the e book for my honest review but have a well worn  and well loved hard copy.

Warning -- contains small spoilers that doesn't give away the ending. I was disappointed with this book. I am a huge sci-fi and romance buff, and I was excited to read this book. However, as I finished the book I realized there were more cons to it than pros.  First, bringing someone from the past to the future… I love the idea of time travel! However, the reasons as to why she was brought from the past (requirements for the challenge) ruined it. The state of her virginity I felt she just thrown in as a requirement because everyone loves a virgin… And to have no virgins above a certain age in the future? That was most definitely a push. Really had no bearing on the Challenge itself. Not to mention, once she qualified for the Challenge that didn’t matter anymore. The other requirement I could see why, but, again, didn’t matter after you qualified. I kept thinking, why didn’t the Challenge require all species to bring a member from the past that was about to die up to the future for the Challenge. That would be the ultimate test of adaptability and you can get rid of all those other stupid requirements… All throughout the book I kept getting distracted by how I would write the requirements for the Challenge better.  Another aspect that bugged me was why the marriage had to take place. Laws do not, and will never, ignore a lovers spat that broke other laws. Not even the most civilized planets from the future. Yet another instance that I found Kearney adding silly and unreal events to try to get to the circumstances she desired. And virgins are not sex divas. Period. That was also a huge kicker. Here you have this virgin and she is a sexual beast! If someone is a sexual beast, they would have found sex prior to their reaching their late 20’s or early 30’s. How Kearney handled the whole money issue, only proved to me (that at least in this novel) Kearney couldn’t take a subject that in itself seem so unreal – as is the case with time travel and psi – and make the reader seem like this could very well happen. All throughout the book I never felt like this “way cool and totally awesome” plot, could ever happen. I will also not comment on character development, except that I found it somewhat lacking. Now, some of the things I liked… Kearney did do a very good job at putting the doubt that Tessa should originally feel, after being pulled from the past, into the book. I often find that writers will put a single paragraph of doubt then have the character believe every word that is said. That was probably my favorite part. Though I do feel that Tessa would put up more of a fight about being naked all the time (but she is a sexual beast, so maybe not). I also really liked the worlds and aliens that were described originally. I thought she put a lot of thought into them, that didn’t necessarily hold true by the end. If you are looking for a book to pass the time and don’t much care for how “real” it must “try” to seem, then this book is perfect. To me, it was one of those throw away paper backs.

Great book! I really enjoyed reading this book! I generally don't read futuristic alien type books like this. But, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book! I had read a previous book from this author that was not futuristic, I think it was called "Kiss me deadly" or something close to that and really enjoyed that book, so I thought I would try something else from this author that I generally never would have read, and I am glad that I did! This book had a great plot and great characters, I loved Kahn and Tessa. They were very different but ended up with more in common then they thought! There was lots of action, romance and suspenseful at times and I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book!

Tessa is a special agent who is snatched at the moment before her death, far into the future, where she must face a difficult challenge to save Earth. Kahn is her trainer and has a vested interest in her winning the challenge as it will also save his home planet, where his race is on the brink of extinction. Be warned that this is a hot, sexy, erotic read that will be a "challenge" to put down...

Secret Service agent Tessa Camen has studied a variety of martial arts during her life. To protect the president she uses her own body as a shield and took the assassin's bullet. ............................................. Tessa woke up nude, in the arms of a handsome man named Kahn. He tells her that she has been brought forward through time over three hundred years. Earth is so polluted that it is brown instead of blue. Earth plans to join the Galactic Federation who will help the planet clean itself. However, to join the Federation, Earth must choose one person to complete 'the Challenge'. If the chosen one wins, Earth wins. If the chosen one loses, Earth may not join or receive help. Tessa IS the Chosen One. Of course, Tessa believes none of it. But Kahn can prove it all. ............................................. Kahn is from the planet Rystan. To seal Rystan as a full member of the Federation he must train Tessa to use the psi-abilities. He has only a few weeks in which to do it. At the same time, his nemesis, an Endekian named Jypeg, is out to kill them both. .................................................................... ...................... ***** I have not read a book this great in a long time! The author created a brave hero and heroine, both warriors with talent, skill, and honor, added in a sentient computer that any 'Star Trek' or 'Star Wars' fan will envy, and pit them against overwhelming odds. The outcome is an action packed space adventure that readers will not EVER forget! I can hardly wait for Susan Kearney's next release to come out. ('The Dare' is due for release June 2005.) In a single word, 'WOW!' *****

I disliked the storyline and did not finish the book. Too bad as the basic character development was great.

I liked the premise of this book fine, and parts of it were decently written. I am also very able to suspend my disbelief, more than the average reader I think; I am not a very critical reader. However, the heroine in this story made NO sense. It was like she was two completely different people depending on the writers need. She went from a kick butt fighter to a submissive airhead strutting around in horrible shoes (really?) in order to obey the male. Ick. I kept getting mentally jolted out of the story by her unlikely behavior. disappointed.

This of course is a series. It was an entertaining romance/sci fi read. It was a fairly good story and while I would like to read more about the world I don't care about the secondary characters enough to buy the succeeding books. However it is a pretty good story. It stands well on it's own and I'm sure for others who are interested in hearing more about other characters, they will enjoy the subsequent books.
