    excellent continuation of the series

This was a great book. I am glad I had the opportunity to find this author - it was through B&N! I never would have found him otherwise.

I have enjoyed the series but the books are very short, less than 200 pages. Nice quick reads for a evening though.

The Dragoneers Saga Continues. Don't miss it!

    M. R. Mathias has certainly got a way with a story twist as he picks up the action in ¿The Dragoneers Part II:¿ Cold Hearted Son of a Witch. The second in a trilogy, this work allows Mathias to slow the first instalment¿s break-neck speed and allow the reader to really come to grips with the world surrounding them: Dragons, witches, sorcerers, kings, battles, and magic. Dragonners II also takes the reader to a new level of understanding of the characters, especially young Jenka who grows to manhood while learning Zah¿s power as a sorcerer and as a woman. Motivations are somewhat limited to survival and conquest, but character development continues to grow. In this land of trolls and danger, Jenka¿s dragon, Jade plays a larger part in the evolution of the characters and the direction of the story. Eventually, the impending Saraxian Confliction brings the reader to a new light: these travelers are true Dragoneers, and Mathias molds as real a fantasy land as possible into his exciting, fast-paced saga, the saga of the Dragoneers. ¿Cold Hearted Son of a Witch¿ also brings Mathias¿ humor into this high-fantasy mix. While a bit heavy-handed, it brings fun to the surface and allows the characters to grown into well-rounded features of the story. The pacing is good, slightly slowed from ¿The Royal Dragoneers,¿ and the author¿s own enjoyable, distinctive style still shines.

A Fun Read. Three and a half stars.

Cold Hearted Son of a Witch is book II in Mathias' trilogy, and I'm assuming a bridge to book III. Considering the number of characters (okay, who is that guy and what's his background again?) it's helpful to have read book I, The Royal Dragoneers, first. This is a fun read in terms of movement, animation and creativity. In the first book I found the overstimulated, non-stop action sequences a bit of a challenge, and I was hard pressed to find a place where I could catch my breath. That frantic momentum is, thankfully, missing from this book, which means a smoother ride for the reader. The easier pace gave me the opportunity to finally get to know the characters. Knowing their personalities shines a new light on the overall story, which - logically - makes the mental experience more enjoyable. Mathias' sense of humor is more prevalant in this book, and I found it spot on throughout the story. The other reviews give more of the story away than I'd like to see, so on that note I won't give anything else up. I'm not a big fan of fantasy books. Having said that - I'm having fun reading Mathias' work.

Great world, great characters, and thoroughly enjoyable plot

Second in M.R. Matthias' teen fantasy epic, The Dragoneers Saga, Cold-Hearted son of a witch picks up the story at the close of The Royal Dragoneers . With so many characters and a well-drawn world so thoroughly imagined and described, it's probably best to start the story with book one. But eager readers, willing to wait to learn who's who, will jump into book two without difficulty. Pleasingly, all the characters are there, teenagers growing older at a convincing rate, and even young March from the author's short novella The First Dragoneer plays a part, his arrival adding even greater breadth to the world that carries the tale.

There's a king inhabiting a sorcerer's body, a sleeping prince, young would-be lovers wondering how to combine commitment to cause with commitment to each other, friendship, dragons, betrayal, and delightfully real relationships in this novel. The combination of immediate and long-term threat is nicely portrayed with all its conflicting interests, as are the problems of everyday needs during earth-shattering danger, making the characters very real and relatable. The author's descriptions bring the world to life, and his skill with battle scenes and their gruesome aftermath is masterful. Wars fought in this world hurt; friends die, and those left behind deal with grief while riding on to save the survivors.

Genuine, gritty, well-imagined, with pleasing reality and humor seasoning fantasy and fear, this second book fulfills all the promise of the first, and more, leaving me eager to move on to book three and glad I've had the chance to revisit the series.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn't get enough of this story.

Cold Hearted Son of a Witch - Dragoneers Saga Book II - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds - Desserts

'The Crown Prince lay peacefully, as if asleep, inside the currently green-colored magical field. He was afflicted with the Goblin King's poison, a terrible stuff that had maddened and then slowly corroded from the inside out anyone who'd breathed it. If the stasis failed before an antidote was concocted, he would surely die. Jenka knew Herald was right about what had to be done, but that didn't relieve the urge Jenka was feeling to just ignore common sense and keep his word by saving his fellow Dragoneer.

The Dragoneer's Lair, as the hall was now called, was an intensely morbid place. Queen Alvazina was often found there arguing with her husband or weeping over her son's body. Like Mysterian, she was a witch of the Hazeltine, and she fully understood the magnitude of the situation. She knew Richard's life hung in the balance, and that there was no certainty about the antidotal potion Mysterian hoped to brew. Her sorrow seemed to sap the hope out of some of the others, thus the hall was sometimes the quietest place in Mainsted.'

In his first book, Mathias introduced us to Jenka De Swasso, Rikky Camille and Zahrellion, along with their dragons Jade, Silva and Crystal. He took us through the battle with the Gravelbone and the poison that put Prince Richard into his state of suspended animation. We saw King Blanchard and Linux change places for the benefit of the war. We also learned the prophecy of what is called the "Confliction" that will be fought by 10 - 5 Dragoneers and 5 dragons. But what is the "confliction" and who are the other 2 Dragoneers? Where will they come from? Where will the battle take place? Will the antidote, once brewed and administered to Prince Richard, counteract the poison and bring him back to help fight in the confliction? And will Linux and the King finally make the switch back into their own bodies?

It didn't take me long to read M. R. Mathias' first book. It was packed with action, excitement, suspense and a little humor now and then, making it a fast enjoyable read. When I read his second book in this series Cold Hearted Son of a Witch, I expected more of the same. Well, he didn't disappoint me. It has everything that the 1st book had and more.

I've never been a big fan of fantasy books but this author is changing that. He could carry this book into a series of 10 and I'll read, and am sure, enjoy every one. I love reading this series.

    I found this book interesting

Reviewed by Lynn F. for Readers Favorite

Cold Hearted Son Of A Witch by M.R. Mathias is book two in the authors Dragoneers Saga. All readers who like high fantasy will enjoy this series very much. With the fate of all people and their kingdom in jeopardy, five dragons with five riders must defend the fate of not only the kingdom but all peoples. In order to save the Crown Prince Richard who has been afflicted with the Goblin Kings poison, dragoneers Zahrellion and Rikky embark on a special quest. They need to gather mushrooms that only grow on the night of the full moon in the serpents dung. These are the only ones potent enough to pull out the poison. Dragoneer Jenka has his own mission to attend to. He has to escort the Kings Rangers back to their country and try and find a special map which eventually leads him to more than he had bargained for. Once at the castle, all five dragoneers and their dragons meet up to fight to save the kingdom.

A fantasy book has to be good for me to be able to get into and I found this book interesting. It showed us good versus evil as we encountered trolls, elves, dragons, witches, sorcery and witchcraft. If you enjoy reading J.R Tolkin, C.S. Lewis and other fantasy writers then I feel like you will enjoy this saga. I do recommend reading the first books in the saga in order to better understand what is happening in this one.
