Children's Literature - Meredith KigerOne of the "Cool Stuff" series, this title features seven craft projects for the garden using simple, inexpensive, and sometimes found objects. The book begins with some safety guidelines and suggestions for making the activities go smoothly. Most of the tools and materials necessary for assembling the projects are pictured rather than being listed at the beginning. The seven projects include garden markers from rocks, a zen garden in a saucer, shoe planters, a fairy house, a beaded wind chime, stencil steps and a painted bird bath. Each project includes a colored photo of the finished project, a list of materials needed, step by step instructions including photographs for most steps, plus boxed tips for extra help. The projects are suitable for younger elementary students with guidance and older elementary students could probably handle with little assistance. Some of the projects seem questionable; the planter project uses fabric shoes. How long would they last in a moist environment? As the book suggests, permission from parents is a good idea as many of the projects do not seem to fit a natural environment. A conclusion page encourages participants to use their imagination for other projects. A glossary, index and web sites for further info are included. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
