Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
Mama Tova makes the best cupcakes in Greenfield and patrons line up outside her shop each morning in hopes of buying one. Her cupcakes are so good that the folks from BakeMart, a large bakery manufacturer in town, offer to buy her recipe and mass-produce the cupcakes. But Mama Tova isn't having any part of it; her recipe is a family secret and she has no interest in mass-production. Each morning she makes only nine dozen cupcakes, each one a little different from the others. When those are gone, she closes up shop until the next day. That's the way she likes it and she is not about to change. Frustrated with her lack of interest in joining forces with BakeMart, the owner, Mr. Kandinsky, announces a cupcake-baking contest with a $1000 prize and the winning cupcake recipe to become part of the BakeMart line of products. Soon after, someone breaks into Mama Tova's shop. The next morning Mama Tova finds the flower garden in front of her shop a mess with flowers and dirt left all over the sidewalk. It looks like someone is trying to steal Mama Tova's secret recipe, and it is up to Jessie, Henry, Violet, and Benny to solve the mystery. Part of the popular "Boxcar Children Mystery" series, the Alden children once again put all their sleuthing skills to work to catch the thief and save the day. Like the other books in the series, there are enough red herrings sprinkled in along the way to keep readers guessing and make it a fun read for young mystery fans everywhere. Reviewer: Pat Trattles

Meet the Author

Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in 1890 in Putnam, Connecticut, where she taught school and wrote The Boxcar Children because she had often imagined how delightful it would be to live in a caboose or freight car. Encouraged by the book's success, she went on to write eighteen more stories about the Alden children.
