Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this German import, first published in 1992, a young blonde witch and her cat decide to investigate a house, but the witch's broomstick breaks. As she explores the house, flaps reveal each of the residents: the Music Witch, who creates "sublime" sounds; the Kitchen Witch, who prepares delicious food; and the Bedroom Witch, with soporific powers. Luckily, the Tinkering Witch is able to fix her broom--while adding rocket power. The cozy, cluttered details on every floor lend the book warmth and charm. Ages 4up. (Aug.)
Children's Literature - Kristina Cassidy
Lizzy is a curious little witch. Her adventures span a series of charming picture books previously unavailable in the United States. The Curious Little Witch introduces Lizzy's adventures to a new generation. Lizzy and her cat take a ride on her broom in the night and find lights on in only one house. Her curiosity will not allow her to fly away without investigating. Once inside the attic, her broom breaks, so she must go downstairs and find help. Lizzy encounters the Bedroom Witch, the Music Witch, the Kitchen Witch, and finally the Tinkering Witch before emerging triumphant with a new rocket-powered broom. The story is enhanced with soft, friendly illustrations packed with little details. Every other page is only half-width, allowing readers to open a seemingly empty panel to find new activity hiding behind it. Students and teachers may especially enjoy Lizzy's adventures around Halloween. However, teachers may wish to point out that Lizzy comes into the witches' home uninvited and may prompt a discussion of whether or not it is wise to go into strangers' homes without an adult. PreS-Gr 2—A young witch and her cat can't resist peeking into a house. Crashing through the attic window, Lizzy's broomstick breaks and they are stranded. As they creep down the stairs, they meet the inhabitants: a Music Witch who plays many instruments, a Kitchen Witch who whips up tasty snacks, and a Bedroom Witch who can put anyone to sleep. None of them can help her. Pencil and watercolor illustrations showcase the furnishings and knickknacks in the curious rooms. When Lizzy meets Tinkering Witch, she explains her plight and soon has a repaired and improved "rocket-powered broomstick." The endpapers feature a cross-section of the house and an invitation for children to pore over the many tiny details. Turning the three-quarter page gatefolds creates a different view of each room and also adds momentum to the somewhat plodding text. While not an essential purchase, this is a cozy Halloween choice.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada
