EXCERPT:

A twig snapped, and I jerked my head to the right. I caught the glint from the eyes of a mountain lion creeping toward us, his ears pulled back, teeth bared.

I froze, hoping we weren’t the prey he stalked.

Kaitlynn shrieked. She grabbed my arm and tried pulling me with her as she ran back to the cars.

The lion rose from his crouch and started charging down the mountain straight for us.

We didn’t have enough time for both of us to make it out of there alive, and the lion sped up at the site of Kaitlynn running away.

I planted my feet. Something clicked inside of me; heat coursed through my veins. My vision intensified, and I could distinguish the areas of down between the lion’s coarse fur as his muscles flexed and stretched.

I’d heard before that you shouldn’t look a wild animal directly in its eyes, but my instinct screamed for me to not turn my back on my attacker. I listened to my gut and looked the mountain lion square into his charging eyes.

The lion and I connected on an intellectual level: predator versus predator. Only I knew, and I deemed the lion knew, as well, that I outranked him as the more fearsome predator. How I recognized this, or how I knew the lion realized this, I couldn’t fathom. I had never been hunting before, so this instinct didn’t come from a belief that man ruled supreme on the food chain. And this moment felt different somehow. It wasn’t man versus beast; it was beast versus beast.

I’ve had this book on my kindle for I don’t know how long. A long time. It’s always been one of those, “I will get to it when I can” books, even though I’ve seen rave reviews about it from other bloggers I follow. Then an opportunity came up to review the second book in this series, and so I had to start on the first one. I’ll be honest – I’d estimate that in the first third of this book or so I had thought about DNF’ing it. There were some parts that seemed a bit cheesy, and I thought it read a bit younger than I really was in the mood for. But I hung in there. And I am SO glad I did. This book morphed into this fantastic urban fantasy tale with a ton of action, a love triangle, and relationships strong enough to build houses on. So the slow start really became irrelevant to me. I’m even writing my review early, which is something I never do, so I can make sure I remember where book one ends and book two begins.  Brooke is a highschool aged girl. Everything seems to be going her way. She’s dating Jaren, who is one of the most popular guys in school. And her best friend, Kaitlynn, is now dating Jaren’s best friend, David. It’s like the dream team of dating when you are in highschool, right? And then Brooke notices someone is kind of stalking her. Ok… there is no kind of about it, he is after her. And one night, the stalker shows up at Jaren’s door and demands Brooke come with him. This is a catalyst to change her entire life.  That night she finds out she is part Pijawika, which is a Croatian vampire basically. There are different types of Vampires, and a whole class system. Then she meets other people, and even discovers she has some supernatural abilities. She isn't thrilled about this information, which I thought was unusual.  If it were me I would have been ecstatic. e Brooke’s adventure, for lack of a better word, of being on the run from whomever is hunting her turned this book into a kick ass story. Her mentor of sorts, Mirko, is charming and tenacious, with a bit of a smart ass side. And there develops a love triangle with her, Jaren, and Mirko. I won’t tell you how that turns out, but for the record – I think she made the right decision in the end. I can only hope the decision stick.  The story travels through several states, and there is so much that happens in a short amount of time. I really loved watching Brooke develop and learn about her Pijawika side and history. If you like books with a bad ass heroine, tons of secrets and lies, and a bit of romance, then this would definitely be a good pick for you.

Find this review and more at Lusty Penguin Reviews! Angeline Kace enthralls and entertains in the first installment of the Vampire Born Trilogy, Descended by Blood, a young adult paranormal romance. The author does a brilliant job of building her own unique world of Pijawika, Zao Duh, and Drustvo, three races relating to vampires. Brooke Keller is your average teenager enjoying school, her friends, and her boyfriend, Jaren Matthews. But, Brooke’s life changes forever when she discovers that she is part vampire. Stunned by the news that Brooke is a vampire, Jaren breaks up with her. Nevertheless, Jaren takes Brooke to meet Mirko, a Zao Duh, assigned to protect Brooke. Despite the fact that Mirko sees that Jaren still has strong feelings for Brooke, Mirko makes it plain to everyone that he is interested in Brooke too. With all of the changes in her life, Brooke finds it difficult to determine who she wants to be with, Jaren or Mirko. I sympathized with Brooke as she struggles with relationships and with all of the physical changes within herself, fearing she is becoming a monster. Along with the love triangle, Kace consummately develops Brooke’s relationship with her best friend, Kaitlynn. Kaitlynn stands by Brooke without hesitation when it is revealed that Brooke is part vampire, which makes her a fabulous friend. Fully drawn into the Kace’s unique paranormal world in Descended by Blood, I was completed captivated by the memorable characters, the multiple storylines, and innovative plot twists that ensnared me in this story right up to the shocking cliffhanger ending that left me anxious to read the next story. I received an eBook copy of the book for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

So this book is poorly written it has a great idea and could be amazing, but the language and actual structure is very childish. It makes me cringe to read most of it. I doubt I that I will read another book by this author not because the idea was bad but please honey use more sophisticated sentence structure!! Please!!

What is the book about? Brooke is an average teenage girl who moves from high school to high school because her mother moves them constantly. Her life is finally coming together, with a best friend, Kaitlynn and a new boyfriend she's been crushing on Jaren. One day Booke and Kaitlynn are almost attacked by a lion but miraculously Brooke is able to command him to leave them alone. Brooke thinks someone may have sent the lion to attack them. Who could do such a thing, and did they know that Brooke would be able to stop the lion? Besides there close call with the lion her life is finally becoming constant and normal until her and her boyfriend Jaren are attacked by a Pijawika, otherwise known as a vampire. When she explains to her mother all that she knows she finds out that she is a Melez or a half-breed. As a melez she has to stay in hiding because a Pijawika and a human are not supposed to pro-create. It seems though her secret is already out and someone is after her! Who could possibly want her and for what reason? What did I think? Well I will first say that the end of this book was a huge cliff hanger!! Angeline Kace you need to hurry and finish that second book, the first chapter preview just wasn't enough! I thought this was a good book. You don't really expect the twists and turns this book takes. I liked the relationship Brooke and Kaitlynn had, they're best friends but they care so much for each other as if they were sisters. This book was a perfect length, not too long and not too short. I will be looking for Ms. Kace's second book the second it hits stores.

My Summary: Brooke has been on the move her whole life. She's never really understood why her mom moved them around so much. Then, just as she starts to settle in to her new town, things get dangerous. Could this danger be what her mom has been avoiding all these years? Brooke has wanted Jaren's attention for a long time and just as they are settling into a relationship, Jaren is attacked by a vampire who is coming for Brooke. She manages to kill the vampire using skills that come naturally. Which leaves her to question, what the heck is happening to her? Brooke, Jaren, and best friend Kaitlyn set out to find the answers to her new found powers and to find out who is after her. Along the journey she is introduced to Mirko, who helps her to control and use her new skills. He may also hold not only the answers to her questions, but the key to her heart as well. My Take: This was one action packed story that help my attention all the way through. Brooke was a solid heroine with kick butt abilities. I appreciated how the story developed. It was solid and steady. As for characters, I liked Brooke pretty much from the start. On occasion, the female leads can annoy me, but Brooke rang true as likable and strong. I really like her friend Kaitlyn. She made me laugh. I loved how she stood by Brooke, who really needed someone constant in her life. Brooke had so much change in her life that the stability of her friendship with Kaitlyn was important. Now, my thoughts on the boys. I mean really...what is Brooke thinking? Why is she even questioning who she should be with? I never liked Jaren. He's so back and forth with his commitment to Brooke, I found it annoying. Mirko on the other hand, *fans self* he's the total package. Not only is he honest with Brooke, but he's developed true feelings for her. He also respects her abilities and decisions. So my challenge to you is this, can you handle a book with a hot hero and a kick butt heroine? Can you survive the action packed adventure that Angeline Kace takes you on? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then this is the perfect read for you!

Wow. This was a super fast read. I totally loved this book. Lots of tension, creative story, and intriguing characters. It's not just another vampire novel. The twists are different and unique. It does have a flavor of Vampire Academy to it, which is fine by me because I loved that series. Looking forward to reading Angeline Kace's future books!

Descended by Blood by Angeline Kace is the first book in the Vampire Born series. The main character Brooke Keller has moved around most of her life. She lives with her mom who is very protective over her. She finally has a best friend, Kaitlynn and a hot boyfriend, Jaren. Things are going very well for Brooke until she notices that she's being followed and possibly stalked by a creepy stranger. When the creeper tries to kidnap Brooke in front of Jaren a mystery reveals itself. Brooke exhibits special powers that she can't explain. Frightened and worried Brooke goes on the run with Jared and Kaitlynn only to find that whoever is after her is not far behind. Descended by Blood has an very interesting, action packed plot. This story line includes a love triangle between Jaren, Brooke, Mirko who is the guy sent to protect her. The author has set up a great back story to the history of vamps as well. I also like the depth Kace gives her characters. It really helped to understand the characters and their actions better. One thing that bothers me in books is instant love. I felt that Brooke and Jarens relationship was a bit rushed. Kace explains in her novel that vampires form attachments very quickly so I could understand why it happened so quickly but it still doesn't work for me. Mirko and Brooke's relationship is more my speed. Mirko is immediately attracted to Brooke but there are no instant confessions of love. Another thing I really like in this book is the characters reactions to their situations. It's good and refreshing to see characters not always have such a positive view and to be so accepting of life changing events. To me that seems like a normal reaction. For instance Brooke is mad at her mother for the secrets she kept from her her whole life. I like that some characters can go with the flow but it's also nice to see characters having trouble dealing with situations. Overall this is a good book to read. It's very fast paced and exciting. I definitely want to continue reading this series especially since it ended with a cliff hanger. The next book, Enemy Within, comes out this year.

Brooke Keller isn't your typical high school student. After a lifetime of moving from place to place, she has finally found a spot where she feels at home and belongs. But when strange things start happening, she's afraid to tell her mother and find out they have to move again. Now by strange things, I mean really strange. She "talks" to a mountain lion that attacks her on a hike and realizes that a man is stalking her - trying to kill her. After the attempt at her life, her mother finds out of course, and then a whole new set of strange things begin. She finds out that she is a vampire, and it turns out that she is a very special one. She teams up with a group that is determined to keep her alive and help her adjust to her new life. Brooke was a good character. She was sufficiently "freaked out" by the strange turn of events her life had taken. She is at once disgusted at her new way of life, and wanting to embrace her new powerful self. She adjusts quickly, but in a way that makes the story real and involving. She finds herself torn between her old life and her new one - torn between her high school love and the vampire hunk that is trying to help her. The attempts on her life continue and she has the choice to embrace her new life and powers or be killed. A wonderful, quick read that I recommend to fans of urban fantasy. 3.5/5

I enjoyed this book and have recommended this book to friends that like to read as much as I do. The characters are interesting and the story kept me interested the entire time. Lots of vampire books out there to read right now, but I am glad I picked this one to read.
