Meet the Author

Bentley Little was born in Arizona a month after his mother attended the world premiere of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. He is the author of ten previous novels, including The Revelation, The Mailman, The Summoning, Death Instinct (published under the name Phillip Emmons), University, Dominion, The Ignored, The Store, The House and The Town.     A book that promised something good, but didn't deliver....

    This book had just enough interesting things going on to keep me reading; however, I couldn't figure out the author's style. One minute, I'm like, "yeah", this is getting good and then he just drifts into juvenile anecdotes. The story line ended up being a cliche, and the author seems like he's trying too hard to write the feelings and thoughts of young, college students caught up in a "been there, done that" story.

    So disappointing

    Let me start by saying that I have been a huge Bentley Little fan for years and always eagerly await the next book. When I saw this was available as an ebook, I bought it and started it right away. That's when the disappointment started. Usually when I buy a book by Little, I start it early in the day because I know I will read all day and finish it. This one...2 1/2 weeks of making myself read and I finally finished today. The ending wasn't a greusome shock like the rest of his novels and now I feel left unsatisfied. Booo on this one, Mr. Little. Sorry.

    Never Fails to Frighten

    A horror marvel, Little's words inspire anxiety-a tension so thick you can't help but be on edge-as he slowly, methodically builds on your fears with each penetrating page.

    As Gary and his friends drive across the Arizona desert, they're just typical college kids taking a break from their schedule and planning a fun-filled weekend at the Burning Man Festival. Unfortunately, what they expect and what they receive are in totally opposite realms. As they wake from what they immediately recognize as a drug-induced slumber, the once cheerful party is now minus one. Gary's girlfriend Joan is gone.

    In a state of utter panic, Gary is drawn back to the imagined safety of the UCLA campus with the desperate hope that Joan will be waiting. However, Joan has vanished along with all traces of her existence. Frustrated by the general air of skepticism and complete lack of assistance from the authorities, Gary and his small troupe of friends are determined to find out what really happened before they begin to disappear themselves. But, they have no idea what they're up against and the horrors they find are much too real when the small, ill-equipped group faces off against a cult leader with a larger-than-life grasp.

    Little never fails to frighten and "The Disappearance" is no exception.

    Good NookBook

    This was the first book of Bentley Little's that I read. It was a good book in that the subject was different. The beginning was fast paced and the end of the book was good. The middle part kind of just kept going on and on a little too long. I still enjoyed the book. I'm glad I read it.

    This will leave chills inside the readers' hearts

    Five UCLA students drive from California to Nevada to attend the tribal gathering Burning Man in the Black Forest Desert. After a couple of fun filled days, on the second night Gary feels drugged and is knocked out along with his four friends. When he looks for his companions he finds Reyn, Stacy and Brian, but his girlfriend Joan is missing. The police don't take the disappearance seriously; the four students return to the college to work on a plan to find Joan.

    They learn someone tampered with Joan's files so it looks as if she never attended the school; her Facebook and My Space pages are gone. Teri Lin, the student who gave Joan's family number, is killed by a man wearing hAmish like homespun clothing that. Gary is kidnapped by three men who wear the identical clothing as Teri's killer wore. When he escapes he finds himself in New Mexico. He learns Joan is being held in the religious cult's compound in Bitterwood, Texas where she grew up. Gary and his friends arrive to spring her but hundreds of worshipers of Father surround her. Joan knows she F Father will hunt her and her friends until they are dead.

    This will leave chills inside the readers' hearts as the audience will be spellbound with fear yet horrified with this powerful human horror thriller. Gary is a mature person who knows his love for Joan is not a youthful game but much more. Resolute though some would insist foolish, he risks his life for his beloved knowing the cult will try to kill him to prevent one of theirs leaving. Bentley Little will appear on bestseller lists as he mesmerizes his fans with the Disappearance.

    Slow paced

    Ive read most of Little's books and this one was hard to get through. The Resort was interesting, more so than this novel.

    Book of the Occult ... Not Real Horror

    Bentley Little is one of the best horror novelists out there, however, "The Disappearance" was a complete disappointment. Little's books are usually gruesome, scary, and fun- this one was not. It follws a group of friends who get drugged while at Burning Man, and wake up to discover that one girl, Joan, has disappeared. The group of friends go on a rampage looking for the girl, and do find her, only to have her disappear again. Ultimatley in the end, they find her, and thats all.... There are "Insiders" I suppose you can call them in the book, and the cult master 'father', but the book goes almost nowhere. So, I was a bit disappointed, wanting some of that SPARK that little delivers in his novels, but this one did not have it. Im glad I didn't have to pay full price for it.

    The Disappearance or The Disappointment

    I am a huge fan of Bentley Little books. He has the ability to take a situation that is relatively normal and take it so far beyond what anyone could imagine that you have to continue reading. This book, I had to force myself through. It didn't seem his style and I was left wondering if someone else had written it.

    Too often I was lured into a situation only to find it ended without any payoff or anything happening. Too many things made no sense. Without giving away any plot, there were just too many loose ends. I don't need everything tied up in a bow and I appreciate that sometimes there is no explanation for things that happen, but this book had a lot of little, meaningless moments that made no sense and were never brought up again. Rosencrantz and Guildenstein, why bother putting them there? They made no difference to the plot and served to be more annoying than terrifying.

    As a matter of fact, I found no real terror, no real horror, no real suspense in this book. I hope that the next Little book I get my hands on is back to his original form and not watered down for mass consumption.
