Editorial Reviews

Don Franceschini
"Display of Power is a remarkable read for all. Daymond John's story is more than how the fashion world was turned inside out by FUBU. It's a lesson on how to overcome obstacles in life and how to unleash your latent talents to make your dreams come true. It's also a very valuable tool for the business world-from start-up companies finding their way, to large companies where policies and politics can often smother the entrepreneurial spirit."
Russell Simmons
"Daymond John is a drive, visionary leader who is not afraid to take risks. This brief glimpse into his life and mind is also a look at the new generation of CEOs. If you want to own your own business, or if you're a veteran executive who wants to know the midset of this changing world, Daymond walks you through it in Display of Power. A must read."
Reed Business Information
John, the founder and CEO of fashion label FUBU, presents the inspiring story of his life, from his upbringing as a poor black youth to his rise as a fashion juggernaut, recently ranked #15 in men's magazine Details' "50 Most Influential Men," and presented a Crain's Business "Top Forty Under Forty Award."
Montel Williams
"Daymond John brings his signature style to the world of books, and Display of Power is a must-read for anyone wondering how a kid from Hollis, Queens could climb to the very top rungs of the fashion industry."

Meet the Author

Daymond John is the CEO of FUBU, President of Shark Branding, TV Personality on ABC Shark Tank, author of "Display of Power" and "The Brand Within."

From sewing handmade garments in his mother's basement, to partying at one of his multimillion dollar properties and ringing in the new millennium with international superstar Prince, Daymond John’s climb to the top has been fettered with extreme highs and lows. Yet the fact that he has revolutionized the face of business and entrepreneurship is undeniable.

Many are clueless about the amazing and harrowing story of how Daymond and his three friends – Keith Perrin, J. Alexander Martin, and Carl Brown – went from selling hats out of Daymond’s basement in Hollis, Queens, to building fashion empire with an estimated $400 million turn over. Heralded as “the Godfather of urban fashion,” Daymond’s marketing expertise and vision paved the way for many of today’s top-selling apparel businesses.

Since FUBU’s launch in 1992, black business ownership has increased tenfold. Entrepreneurship is now recognized as an MBA concentration at some of America’s top business schools, and the world’s largest corporations have African American senior executives. This may seem Commonplace now, but Daymond’s arrival on the scene stirred a more public presence of minority ownership, while inspiring a new generation of power players, and challenging corporate America to match his $4 billion in retail sales.

Team FUBU is the pioneer of blending clothing and music videos, celebrities and artists in music videos, TV shows and movies long before other major brands thought to do so. From American Express to Lincoln to Hewlett Packard, everybody has jumped on the celebrity endorsement, guerrilla marketing and product placement bandwagon. It was FUBU who first made this strategy mainstream. The black and red logo, the LL Cool J ads, and the “For Us By Us” acronym have all a vital part of popular culture as well as marketing and branding history.

Although I follow completely different genres of music and fashion than what was described in this book, I found this to be a very interesting read. Daymond John describes his upbringing and things that happened around his neighborhood in Queens including the birth of hip hop, which is now a huge part of the music world. Through a combination of determination, skill and luck, he launched a highly successful clothing line inspired by the styles of the hip hop crowd. I found it fascinating to read about his experiences and enjoyed the advice that he shares.

Biz, management, marketing, communication, diversity skills. I am a college business instructor and will definitely encourage my students to read this. One thing that pops out from this book that i always tell my students...we all have the same capabilities; its up to you to decide how you will utilize those capabilities. Well written Daymond John.
