Gr 6-9-Julie Ellis and football star Luke Muldenhower had everything going for them-popularity, good grades, and love. Then Luke develops Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Shaken to the core, Julie is determined to help him through his chemotherapy and get through this ordeal so their lives can return to normal. Then masses are discovered in his chest and groin area. Soon after he begins radiation therapy, their close relationship begins to deteriorate as Luke pushes Julie away. This novel contains excellent information on cancer treatments and the emotional world of cancer victims and those who love them. The characters are convincing enough to draw readers into the drama and the inevitable conclusions that occur when one is faced with a life-threatening illness. McDaniel shows her literary expertise by humanizing a terrible disease and guiding readers through the whole process of illness. Pretty Julie and handsome football star Luke have been "engaged" since sixth grade. The attractive high-school couple's fairy tale world of dances, football games, and bright futures envelopes them like a glittery veil. Then Luke becomes ill, and tests confirm the worst medical suspicions--Hodgkin's lymphoma. The better part of the book is consumed with how the two, their parents, and the school community deal with Luke's critical illness and eventual death. Touching scenes abound in this crisis novel, particularly those of the football team's camaraderie and support. The writing is pure romance style, and the characters, especially Julie, tend to talk and think in simplistic terms. "Right now, there was only Luke," she muses typically early on, vaguely wishing she had something as intense to focus on as he had with football and ignoring her mother's prompting to start thinking about college applications. Fans of tear-jerker teen romances will enjoy this offering.

    An Excellent Read

    "Don't Die, My Love" is one of my all-time favorite reads--so far. As a thirteen-year-old this book comes on as a girl's greatest dream and wish, having someone love you more than anything. Julie and Luke's beloved story is quite realistic and lovely, but sad too. In Julie's perspective, the book goes on a emotional roller-coaster of events until the final ones. I cried many times in different places, laughed in the beginning and middle, and felt closure and happiness towards the end. This book is a must-read for everyone and anyone, I enjoyed it greatly.

    Great Book!

    You'll definitely cry during this book, but it is phenomenal. The story line is great and you really begin to become a part of the characters, you start to feel how they're feeling. Truly unforgettable story. You will love this book. I recommend it!

    OMG!!!

    My friend was like "you have to read this book" I said okay, but didn't expect much... BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!! I couldn't put it down!!!!! I really started to actually cry! It is such a well written book! You must read it!!!

    Awesome!

    I loved this book sooo much! As a writer of sad poetry, Lurlene McDaniel inspires me so much! This book was so sad....I can't even express it. But it was so well written and overall an awesome novel!

    amazingly sad.

    after reading this book it made me cry. i love this book. it fealt real and i feel like i am julie sometimes. i love lurlene mcdanial and always will. im team mcdanial 4ever!!!

    Bawled like a baby...

    Just when i thought i was done crying like a baby i started bawling again.. so sad yet shows what it like to love some one and lose them slowly before your eyes

    Oh my.... This was by far one of my favorite books of all time.

    Oh my.... This was by far one of my favorite books of all time. I cried so much. I liked how their relationship was very typical, something you can realate to. I found myself comparing Julie and Luke to me and my boyfriend and it was amazing how alike we were. I can't imagine being in Julie's shoes and experiencing that, because I would never be able to live without my love <3

    AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I love this book anyone who dosent must have problems! I couldnt help but cry no matter how hard i tried to hold those tears back they just pourd out.Im only12 and i have troubles focusing on one thing at a time but got through this book and im glad i did it is AMAZING!!!!!!!!

    Best book ever!!!

    I loved this book so much!! The ending is so sad i tried not to cry during my history class. I wish i could find a guy like luke. He is amazing! This is by far my favorite book ever and i would recommend it to anyone! Larlene Mcdaniel is an amazing author

    I own this book and it truly hits home for me.

    I lost the love of my life 12 years ago in a snowmobile accident. No matter how your loves leaves you it is terrible. I don't know how many times I have read this book. I have had it for years. It is worth buying but be prepared to cry!

    So Sad! But Awesome!

    I really enjoyed this book. Luke is the type of guy any girl would want. But the end is so so so sad. Eventhough i cried a little , i liked this book.
