Overview

What really happened to Mother?

Lauren has come home seven years after her famous mother's mysterious drowning.
They said it was an accident, but the tabloids screamed murder. Her father, a senator, hadn't protected her. Aunt Jule was her only refuge, the beloved godmother she's returning to see.

Lauren stops at Wisteria's annual street festival and meets Nick, a tease, a flirt, and a childhood playmate. The day is almost perfect -- until she realizes she's being watched.

Arriving at Aunt Jule's, Lauren is shocked at the decay of the riverfront home. Aunt Jule seems angry and defensive, even as she fusses over Lauren at her daughter Holly's expense. Nora, Jule's other daughter, is silent and spooky, and stares at Lauren with frightening intensity. Meanwhile, Nick has acted as if he wants to be more than Lauren's friend. So why is he suddenly glued to Holly and almost hostile to Lauren? How can she trust him -- especially now that a series of nasty "accidents" makes Lauren realize that somebody wants her dead? This time, there's no place to run.

KLIATT
This tantalizing story has all of the ingredients for taut, page-turning excitement: murder, money, mystery, intrigue, family secrets, physical attraction. Lauren has returned to her birthplace, Wisteria, seven years after her mother's death. Immediately she finds all is not the perfection she remembers from earlier summers, and yet some things are exactly the same. Just before her mother, Sondra, died, she frequently found things tied in knots: jewelry, scarves, bedding, and lamp cords. When Lauren returns the knots reappear. And just as in the past, things seem to move of their own accord. Tension runs high in the Ingram family household. Cousin Nora appears to wander in a world all her own while Holly is happily and busily finishing her senior year of high school. Godmother Jule has as many unfinished projects as she always did but seems to vacillate back and forth between loving and approving of Lauren, and being strongly critical of Lauren and her mother. Thrown in to the mix is childhood pal, Nick, who is all grown up and gorgeous. Things swing into quick action when someone throws a brick through the windshield of Lauren's car while she's driving. Who is responsible for the murder of Sondra? And who wants Lauren out of the way just as badly? This fast-paced mystery novel is a good read for those young people who enjoy mystery, adventure, and a visit to the mysterious world of the paranormal. Chandler does an excellent job exploring the feelings and emotions involved when Lauren returns to the site of her mother's death. This would make a good addition to a library or a classroom reading section.
