AN FBI THRILLER? FIRST TIME IN PAPERBACK

FBI agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock are joined by one of their own and a Virginia sheriff in an extraordinary case that immerses them in the world of psychic visions, mind benders, and communications with the dead.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

With this romantic suspense novel, best-selling author Coulter returns to her FBI series, last visited with Point Blank. Most of the characters from the previous books return, including Sheriff Dixon Noble, from Maestro, VA. The story has two separate plot lines. In the first, the FBI, led by Special Agent Cheney Stone, investigates an assassin's multiple attempts to kill Julia Ransom, a widow whose professional psychic husband, August, was recently murdered. Trying to locate Julia's stalker, Cheney is drawn into the August case, as well as into the world of psychics. The second plot concerns Sheriff Noble's wife, who has been missing for three years. He is investigating Charlotte Pallack, a San Francisco woman who strongly resembles his wife, but Charlotte denies any connection. Inevitably, the FBI crosses paths with the sheriff, and they work together to solve both mysteries. Sandra Burr and Phil Gigante read the female and male voices, respectively. The large number of characters and the switching back and forth between the two stories can be somewhat confusing. Still, this will be popular in public libraries; recommended.

Meet the Author

Catherine Coulter
Catherine Coulter

Catherine Coulter is the author of the New York Times-bestselling FBI thrillers The Cove, The Maze, The Target, The Edge, Riptide, Hemlock Bay, Eleventh Hour, Blindside, Blowout, and Point Blank.

Biography

The author of dozens of bestsellers, Catherine Coulter made her Romance debut with 1978's The Autumn Countess, a fast-moving story she describes as "a Gothic masquerading as a Regency." Six more Regency romances followed in quick succession; then, in 1982, she penned her first full-length historical novel, Devil's Embrace. She counts several trilogies among her most popular historicals, notably the Bride Trilogy -- which, in turn, spawned an ongoing story sequence featuring the beloved Sherbrooke family of Regency-era England.

In 1988, Coulter tried her hand at contemporary romance with a twisty little page-turner called False Pretenses. Her fans ate it up and begged for more. Since then, she has interspersed historicals with contemporary romantic thrillers (like the novels in her bestselling FBI series) in one of the most successful change-ups in the history of romance publishing.

Plenty of Exciting Scenes, but not Ms. Coulter's best.!

Sometimes I enjoy fast paced thrillers, but when I want a well-thought out mystery novels then I read a book by Catherine Coulter. I have enjoyed her FBI series books with Sherlock and Dillon and in "Double Take" is was good to see Cheney and Dix make their return after appearing in Point Blank, which happens to be one of my favorites.

Overall, I didn't think this was one of Ms. Coulter's best books. I had a hard time keeping track of the characters and almost got to the point of keeping a score card as to "who" was "who". For me this "family tree" of characters caused a lot frustration on my part. However, let me say that mid-way through the book the story moved along at a brisk pace giving me plenty of exciting scenes. Soon, I found myself reading page and page until I finished it. Except for a few "kinks" in the story Catherine Coulter didn't disappoint me in this terrific story. And as always I look forward to reading her next novel.

    Great Plot Great Story.

Catherine Coulters FBI series have been one of my favorite mystery reads, and Double Take didn't disappoint me. I thought the story fit well within the series. I will admit that The Cove was one of my favorites. In Double Take I did like the fact that Ms. Coulter put characters in the story from a previous book. The plot was great and I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

    Page Turner

This is a great read for the gym and to be able to keep focused on the story and not so much the workout. The characters are full of intrigue and the plot has many twists and turns which were unexpected. A recommended beach read as well.

Excellent - kept me on turning the pages

The story was great after it all came together. At first it was hard to keep track of the characters, then all of the sudden they all became clear as to their relations with each other. I hated to go to sleep at night because I wanted to keep reading. I truly enjoyed reading each page.

    Jennifer Wardrip - Personal Read

Unbelievable...and by that, I mean literally unbelievable.

A rundown of the first chapter: An FBI agent sees an unknown woman get punched in the face, and then the assailant pulls a knife on her. When said FBI agent yells at the assailant, he runs away, after tossing the woman over the side of the pier into the bay. FBI agent, because he's not only an FBI agent but also an honorable man, rescues woman from the ocean, and revives her with CPR. Then, because she tells him to, he doesn't call the police. Instead, FBI agent carries (still) unknown woman to his personal vehicle, drives (still) unknown woman to her mansion home, takes (still) unknown woman upstairs to her bedroom and her master bath, then strips down (still) unknown woman and himself to their underwear and gets into a warm shower with her. Then, FBI agent puts on men's clothes that (still) unknown woman provides for him, and decides he will now call someone he knows in the local police department.

And then, finally, finds out who unknown woman is.

T-o-t-a-l-l-y unbelievable. Not to mention that the dialogue throughout the book is so stilted that I found myself groaning more often than grinning. Where I used to love the Dillon and Savich stories, Ms. Coulter's newer works have left me longing for the books of old.

If you must, check DOUBLE TAKE out from your local library. Or wait until it comes out in paperback. In my opinion, it's definitely not worth the hardcover price.

    Interesting interwoven plots

I have read all the books in this series and have liked all of them though, of course, some are better than others. This was a really good one. I enjoyed having more than one plot going on in the storyline. Nothing dragged. I see that some reviewers are complaining because there wasn't enough to it and, yet, some were complaining about some previous books because there was too much detail (Which proves, once again, that you can't please everybody!). The mystery here wasn't exactly a mystery except at the very beginning. However, the characters were interesting (as always) and did not wander around in a fog of stupidity. They just had to figure out exactly what happened and have the proof of it, which isn't easy. I always enjoy reading Coulter's FBI series because here we have good, ethical people trying to get the job done right. There isn't a lot of 'sheet-burning' sex to fill out the pages or (thankfully) too much of the dark angst of the killer's mind. It isn't a light read, exactly, but it is an uplifting one with drama. And, of course, we get to meet with Sherlock and Savick yet again. I find the psychic twist (and how it effects Savick) delightful.

    Where are Savich and Sherlock?

I bought this book because I saw the names Savich/Sherlock on the dust jacket. They hold a plot together as it twists and turns to an exciting finish. This plot was fragmented with too many subplots. Not interesting and I didn't care for the characters.

    Very confusing

The story was really fast, but it was really complicated. Somehow everyone in the freakin book is somehow related, and all of their names are very similar, so its hard to keep up. UGGG it was just very disappointing!!!
