Overview

For four thousand years, the Guardships have ruled Canon Space - immortal ships with an immortal crew, dealing swiftly and harshly with any mercantile houses or alien races that threaten the status quo. But now the House Tregesser has an edge: a force from outside Canon Space offers them the resources to throw off Guardship rule. This precipitates an avalanche of unexpected outcomes, including the emergence of Kez Maefele, one of the few remaining generals of the Ku Warrior race-the only race to ever seriously threaten Guardship hegemony. Kez Maefele and a motley group of aliens, biological constructs, an scheming aristocrats find themselves at the center of the conflict. Maefele must chose which side he will support: the Guardships, who defeated and destroyed his race, or the unknown forces outside Canon Space that promise more death and destruction.

    A very good sci-fi story

    This book is a great sci-fi story. The writing is choppy at times, and the characters' motivations are often vague. However, it manages to transcend those shortcomings to form a fascinating novel. It covers an arc across approximately 20 years involving a threat to the order of the human part of the galaxy. This 'order' is enforced by 2,000 year old guarships that operate mostly under their own control. The guardships don't really answer to any political authority any more, their only centralized command is a set of AI personalities of former ship commanders. The crews are... well, clones of the the intial crews, taught from birth to be perfect soldiers. If they get promoted sufficiently, they become part of the AI collective consciousness with all of the other old soldiers.

    Unheroic space opera

    Another novel where there's no one to root for. Not the Houses which act more like organized crime than companies. Not the seemingly irrelevent Cannon government. Not the religious whako Outsiders. And certainly not the Gaurdships that have been stiffeling humanity under their jack-boots for 3000 years.
