Prologue
Once upon a time, a rich, grumpy old man sat down with quill and paper and changed the lives of his female descendants forever. . . .
“I, Sir Hamish Pickering, being of sound mind but ailing body, do make my last will and testament.
“I’ve climbed as high as a man can, despite having twice the brains, wisdom and fortitude of the layabout aristocracy. Yet, a woman can wed as high as her looks will let her, up to a duchess if she may.
“There, my own daughters have failed me miserably. Morag and Finella, I spent money on you so that you could marry higher but you weren’t up to snuff. You expected the world to be handed to you. If any female of this family wants another farthing of my money, she’d best set herself to earn it.
“Therefore, I declare that the entirety of my fortune be kept back from my useless daughters and be held in trust for the granddaughter or great-granddaughter who weds a duke of England or weds a man who then becomes a duke through inheritance, at which time the trust will be released to her and only her.
“If she has any sisters or female cousins who fail, they may each have a lifetime income of fifteen pounds a year. If she has any brothers or male cousins, though the family does tend to run to daughters, more’s the pity, they will receivefive pounds apiece, for that’s all I had in my pocket when I came to London. Any Scotsman worth his haggis can turn five pounds into five hundred in a few years’ time.
“A set amount will be given each girl as she makes her debut in Society, for gowns and whatnot.
“Should three generations of Pickering girls fail, I wash me hands of the lot of you. The entire fifteen thousand pounds will go to pay the fines and hardships of those who defy the excise man to export that fine Scots whisky which has been my only solace in this family of dolts. If your poor sainted mother could only see you now.
Signed,Sir Hamish PickeringWitnesses,B.R. Stickley, A.M. WolfeSolicitor’s firm of Stickley & Wolfe”
So reads the will of Sir Pickering. Now his granddaughters Phoebe, Deirdre and Sophie have come to London to try their hand at winning the prize.
Phoebe, the kind-hearted vicar’s daughter with a past, has already lost—and won. By choosing the penniless bastard half-brother of the man who could have been her duke, she walked away from the Pickering fortune with a smile. Rafe, her once rakish, now devoted, husband, has taken her away on their honeymoon—a gift from Rafe’s jilted brother, the Marquis of Brookhaven. Their future is bright with love, if not with gold.
Now only the beautiful, Society-bred Deirdre and the plain, bookish Sophie remain in the game. The Marquis of Brookhaven, soon to be the Duke of Brookmoor, is still up for grabs . . . but not for long, if Miss Deirdre Cantor has anything to say about it.  Copyright © 2008 by Celeste Bradley. Pretty good.

I liked this book. I loved how Calder was constantly putting his foot in his mouth, it was funny. I liked Deidre's straightforwardness and strong will. Meggie's character was cute and hilarious. I rated this 3 stars because the ending seemed very rushed and didn't really fit in with the rest of the story, the "public house" scene while somewhat funny, was ridiculous and didn't do anything for the story. I also felt that there were a lot of loose ends that weren't tied up, I hope they'll be addressed in the 3rd book, but they really should have been finished in this one.

    Certainly not desperate

I will admit that I haven't been able to finish Desperately Seeking a Duke but having bought both it and Duke Next Door, when I wasn't sure I wanted to read about how one brother deliberately provokes another and the girl caught in between [ it was a little too co-sanguinous for me] I moved on to this book instead. I thought the little I'd read of Deidre was interesting so I decided to read her book first. Imagine my surprise on realising that the hero of her book was none other than the 'spiteful' brother of Desperate. The author really manages a feat in helping you to not forget the wrongs of the past, while allowing you to understand the character's motivations. I thought this was well written and that the author really developed her characters well. I never felt like she tried to make either of them other than they were and it was interesting to discover what had made each of them the way they were. Definitely worth reading...and maybe one day I will finish book 1 in this series.

Strong Follow-up to Desperately Seeking a Duke. Very Satisfying

The Duke Next Door is a decent follow up to Desperately Seeking a Duke. I loved the first book soooo much and this one held up reasonably well against such a strong predecessor. Diedre and Calder had alot of emotional problems in their path to happiness. An abusive stepmother, an unfaithful wife, and a delightfully mischievous nine year old. Bradley does an amazing job of weaving the character's fears into the story with an easy smoothness that accentuates just how much Diedre and Calder truly need each other. Although, the POV of the story changes from Diedre to Calder kind of roughly at times. But really that is my only complaint with this book. It's sweet and funny. Both Diedre and Calder are believably troubled and have a wonderful journey along the way to self improvement.

    more from this reviewer

    an entertaining often amusing historical

In 1815 their late grandfather Sir Hamish Pickering, disappointed in his daughters not marrying up, placed a stipulation in his will that has his three granddaughters jumping. The first of the trio to marry a duke inherits his fortune. The competing cousins started with the rustic vicar's daughter Phoebe, the elegant Deirdre and the too tall Sophie, but Phoebe is no longer a contender having fallen in love with a duke¿s brother (see DESPERATELY SEEKING A DUKE).-------------- Deirdre hones in on ducal heir, ¿The Beast of Brookhaven¿ widow Calder Marbrook known for women jilting him at the altar like Phoebe just did. Deirdre tells Calder the truth just not the whole truth as she figures that is her best chance of winning Calder agrees to marry her. Soon afterward, Deirdre meets her new spouse¿s young child Lady Margaret that she did not know existed the stepdaughter from hell who does not want a new mama. Upset that her Beast was less than honest with her as he concealed his offspring for her, she wants out, but Calder wants Deidre as they play a sexual game of check and checkmate with one another.---------------- The second Heiress Brides¿ Regency romance is an entertaining often amusing historical. Deirdre is a terrific lead character as she wants the title to inherit the fortune, but wants love to come with her duke. She feels that is not asking too much although she reconsiders after meeting Meggie whether the money is worth it. Readers will appreciate their gender war enflamed by their love for one another and the brat.------------------ Harriet Klausner
