Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Costello
Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin may be long gone but their spirit lives on in Jeremy Chechik's whimsical film. Benny (Aidan Quinn) is a garage owner who is responsible for the care of his mentally ill sister, Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson). After a poker loss forces him to take in the eccentric Sam (Johnny Depp) as a boarder, Benny becomes concerned when Joon finds Sam attractive. Chechik's film has charm to spare but is a trifle evasive in its suggestion that a form of mental illness that sounds like schizophrenia can be cured by love. But reality must take a back seat in a film which almost amounts to a showcase for a virtuoso performance by Johnny Depp. An actor who has often played down his matinée idol looks to explore characters inhabiting the outermost regions of human experience and imagination, in this film he plays a character that has apparently absorbed the complete works of the great silent comedians, and replicates their style in his everyday behavior. Although this can sound repellently precious, Depp's ability to mimic Keaton and Chaplin, as well as inventing some of his own comic business, is astonishing. But as appealing as this character may be, one wonders, along with Benny, if he is the answer to the problems of the troubled Joon. Quinn, Masterson, and Julianne Moore, as a waitress Benny has his eye on, are all excellent.

    I Also Recommend:

    Johnny Depp at His Best

Johnny Depp has always looked for quirky roles, and his turn as a Charlie Chaplin/Buster Keaton-esque street performer makes this charming tale one to watch again and again. From his expressive eyes to his dead-on rendition of Chaplin's classic bread dance from "The Gold Rush," Depp creates a character of depth and humanity out of what could have been a very cartoonish role. Aidan Quinn and Mary Stuart Masterson round out the solid cast, and don't forget to look for a young Julianne Moore as a diner waitress!

    cant even explain!

I've watched Benny and Joon 1012 times, and counting. I'm not entirely obsessed, although I hugged the DVD while driving in the car. Haha. My only wish in my life before I die is to meet someone like Johnny Depp. All his movies are amazing. Did I mention my room has pictures/poseters of him from his movies. Like Cry Baby, Edward Scissorhands, all that stuff. Which I have all those movies. Who wouldn't? :)

this is THE BEST movie ever

this movie... is the best movie... ever. if you want to watch a movie with a girlfriend or boyfriend, this is the movie to get. if you want to watch a movie alone eating popcorn and chocolate this is the movie to get. it'll make you laugh, cry, and pine for the sexiest man alive... johnny depp. his hair, his skin tone, his voice... beautiful. it's witty with a naive romanticism... you won't regret you bought it!

not the best, but in my top ten list

it is in fact my sixth favorite movie after the other johnny depp movies listed below. it was entertaining, a bit sad, but being one of the few pg johnny depp movies, it makes a great family film. it was my first mary stuart masterson movie, (i don't think i've seen others), but she had a great performance.

    My Personal Favourite

This is my personal favourite movie! I love the innocence of Sam and Joon's relationship. The entire movie is well acted. Definetly worth owning and watching many times in a row. (laughs, thinks about how many times I've seen it)

    I'd give 6 stars

I love this movie, it just makes you feel so good. It makes you really think about love under any circumstance. Sam is brilliant, even though he cannot read. You will find yourself falling madly inlove with him just like Joon Pearl does.

    Brilliant!

Benny & Joon should be among everyone's DVD collection. A charming tale of love overcoming adversity, physical and mental. Johnny Depp once again shows his amazing range of takent, quietly drifting from whimsical to adorable with the minimum of effort. All the actors do a great job, solid performances all round. Perfect for a cosy night in with a box of chocolates and a good bottle of wine. An absolute must-see!!!

    What fun!!!

I must admit that I, like almost any other teenage girl, only rented this movie to see Johnny Depp...and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed. But the movie turned out to be a truly great film in addition to the Depp-factor. If you like good music, a nice story, and loads of laughs, this is a movie for you. I would recommend it to anyone. (*Oh, and you'll really get a kick out of Depp's horror movie impersonations... Don't know what I'm talking about? Watch it, and you will!*) Check it out!
