Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
With its re-creations of deleted scenes, insightful commentaries, music videos, interactive games, and enlightening production history, this two-disc Special Edition brings honor to Mulan, Disney's historical adventure from 1998. Mulan, the subject of an enduring Chinese folktale, fits perfectly among the current generation of Disney heroines -- like Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, and Pocahontas, she’s not content to wait for her prince to come. Mulan is a headstrong, independent woman who rebels against the role society has dictated for her. Despite her best efforts, Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wien) is hardly "perfect bride" material. Not at all demure, graceful, or poised, she fulfills her destiny when, to save her frail father, she risks disgracing her family's honor by impersonating a man and fighting the marauding Huns. A pre-Donkey Eddie Murphy breathes fire into his scenes as Mushu, her diminutive dragon guardian. The first animated feature produced at Disney's Orlando animation facility, Mulan is a ravishing blend of traditional and computer animation, with several thrilling battle sequences. The music videos included in this set represent the most familiar songs from the Oscar-nominated score: "Reflection" is performed by Christina Aguilera; the rousing "I'll Make a Man Out of You" is sung (in Cantonese) by Jackie Chan; and the irresistible "True to Your Heart" is represented both in its original music-video form -- featuring 98 Degrees and Stevie Wonder - and as a remake by Raven. Just as Mulan finds her place in the world, so does Mulan take its rightful place in the Disney pantheon.
All Movie Guide
Beginning with The Lion King and Pocahontas, Disney's feature animation efforts took on a more ethnically diverse tone in the late 1990s. As a result, the studio that had once specialized in white-bread Americana took on a more global viewpoint. Mulan was another example of this trend, using mostly Asian voices and a diverse group of production talents in the service of a lavish adaptation of a traditional Chinese folk tale. Centering on a young girl who disguises herself as a man and joins the Army in order to save her family's honor, the film is a feminist statement -- which is in keeping with the 1990s Disney trend of stronger female protagonists. The score by Jerry Goldsmith and songs by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel add some lightness to an unusually mirthless Disney drama. Comedian Eddie Murphy is one of the few big-name talents in the production; Ming-Na Wen's strong but compassionate voice carries the bulk of the film.

Finally a heroine that can kick butt

When it comes to princesses they're always the damsel in distress and fall for prince charming. With the case of Mulan that's all about to change. Here we have Mulan who disguises her self as a boy in order to save her father from fighting since he is not well. While training Mulan learns not only how to fight but learns about love as well while trying to hide her real identity. I must say that the snow mountain scene with the enemy riding through the snow has to be one of the best scenes ever. I especially love the I'll Make a Man out of you song. Usually when it comes to these types of films I tend to skip through the songs, but at this and Pocahontas I actually liked the songs. She's no Xena but a woman all her own. Mulan and Shang do make a cute couple.

    Risk-Taker

Mulan is a movie base on a young Chinese girl that saves her country. By pretending to be a boy, she goes out in war to fight against the evil Hans. Mulan feels as though she is not fit to be the greatest daughter or is not up to becoming a great wife. Fighting for her country simply boosts up her self-esteem to know that she risked her life to save her country. Mulan also has the help of a tiny dragon called Mushu, who was sent by her ancestors. Together, they help defeat the Hans. Most Disney movies are cool, but this movie is grrrrreat!!! The pictures/drawings are designed well. With Mulan being a young girl that saves her country, it sets out a good image for girls. It, also, gives off good vibes to younger children to not be afraid of taking risks, for it could work out for the best. I enjoyed this movie very much, it¿s a great family movie, that has love, friendship, action, and conquering fears.

    Great family film

Mulan is one of my favorite movies. It is a significant improvement over many of Disney's "princess" movies that feature female protagonists. Mulan, instead of heading out into the world to find love, puts herself into the middle of a war to protect her aging father, and to bring her family honor. It's also refreshing to bring in some (admittedly, Americanized) Chinese culture into the scope of popular perception. The film is an adaptation of a famous Chinese legend.

    Love it!

This movie was in a close race for my favorite for the longest time (against Pocahontas). The songs are entertaining, thoughful, and will probably be running through your head from the minute you finish the movie. It's great for people of all ages and is a great movie all around!

    Disney's Tomboy Heroine

"Mulan" is definately one of Disney's best films. It's got an old-fashioned epic story, wonderful characters, incredible songs, and gorgeous animation, as well as adventure, drama, and comedy. The best thing about the movie is Mulan herself. Like most Disney heroines, she's beautiful, caring, and loyal. Yet unlike most heriones, she's not timid, perfect, or super girly. Instead, Mulan's a brave but insecure tomboy. Plus, she's good but not all good. This concept works because it makes us able to see a little bit of yourselves in her. This movie should be enjoyed by Disney fans of all ages.

The best Disney animation film ever!!

This is the best ever of Disney's animation: the animation (especially the depiction of emotions on faces), the colors, and the songs (especially the one about making a man out of Mulan). It's about time that Disney got away from Eurocentric stories and explored myths and tales from other countries. Mulan was the natural choice as the first of hopefully more non-Eurocentric stories. The songs advance the storyline and are not ones that can stand alone but that's the way Broadway musicals now are. I would like to see Disney tackle 'The Ramayana' some day--it's got it all: blue-skinned gods, a quest for a lost love, flying monkeys, and more. Mulan brought this middle-aged Disney fan back into the movie house. The only complaint I had was about Eddie Murphy as the dragon--they should have had another actor play that role; Murphy was a jarring voice in a story about a Chinese myth.

The best Disney movie I have ever seen!!!

The first time I saw this movie was when I was in elementary school, I completely fell in love with this movie!!! It is still my all time favorite movie to watch. The characters, themes, plots and songs are absolutely wonderful! After my fifth time watching it, I memorized the songs and the most memorable lines through out the whole movie. This is a wonderful family movie that everyone will enjoy. I make my family watch it every time I do and even though I watch all the time, they enjoy it with me. The courageous Mulan is very inspiring, honorable, and loveable; she is also very smart, clever, and she never runs out of ideas. Even though Im fifteen years old, She is my idol. She her guardian Mushu, is hilarious in various ways! But it¿s up to you to find out how! Watch the movie, of courage, honor, and love; and I will guarantee you will love it!

    For EveryOne

This movie is one of Disney's best yet....Thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end, even with Eddie Murphy's (Mushu) silly antics.

    Best Disney film so far

This film is the best Disney film yet, in fact, I would go so far as to say it is my favourite film, period. It got me back into the Disney animated movies, after weak efforts of Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Mulan follows a Chinese legend about a girl who impersonates a man in the army in order to save her old father. Full of constant wit and sentiment, fun characters and songs make this movie very memorable and enjoyable. Needs to be a part of your video/DVD collection.

Mulan secertly steals her father's armor and runs away from home in Mulan.

Disney's Mulan is not the very best movie that Disney has made. In fact, there are a lot better movies with better songs. But it is okay. Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) doesn't fit in. So when an army of Huns comes to China, the emperor (Pat Morita) orders new people and old people into their army. The new people is fresh fishes and doesn't have army experince. Mulan's father joins. But that night Mulan cuts her hair short, takes her father's armor and runs away from home. When Mulan's family finds out, they pray to her ancestors for help. A dragon named Mushu (Eddie Murphy) comes to Mulan's aide. Li Shang (B.D Wong) is hired to train the fresh fishes (or the new people to the army). I'm giving Mulan 3 stars because the songs are so bad you whould not remember them when Mulan is over.
