Overview

The "magic" in One Magic Christmas is often (and surprisingly) of the "black" variety. Like Jimmy Stewart before her, worn-out wife and mother Mary Steenburgen wishes that she'd never been born. And like Stewart, Steenburgen is visited by a guardian angel, in this case the western-garbed Harry Dean Stanton. Instead of granting Steenburgen's wish, Stanton shows her what life would be like without Christmas--and that vision is as grim as anything you're ever likely to see in any Holiday film. Throughout the horrendous tragedies heaped upon Steenburgen, we are comforted in the knowledge that Stanton is working in concert with Steenburgen's young daughter. Steenburgen learns her lesson of course, but what a ride!

It has always amazed me that so few have seen or know of this movie. As with other holiday movies, we come away with another sense of who Santa is and why he exists. But do not make the mistake of thinking that this is a child's movie. It is very dark and full of despair. Mary Steenburgen's character is developed and unfolded to us in layers. You ache for her. Like other Disney movies, she has to wage her own inner war to make peace with herself and her family. Her inner battle and eventual coming to terms with issues is unlike any other holiday movie. It is beautiful, startling, and eerie throughout. Not for very little children!

I really enjoyed this christmas movie. It was different than most other movies that came out about the holidays. The story is very dark and emotional for children but I believe that kids who watch this movie could get an understanding on how its like for the majority of Americans who deal with these issues. I definitly recommend this movie to the family especially the children but must explain to the children what going on so they are able to understand the theme the writer and director is trying to protray. Acting is great and the setting is perfect because of its small town location.
