Overview

A contemporary take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle stories, Sherlock is a thrilling, funny, fast-paced adventure series set in present-day London. Co-created by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Coupling) and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Office, Love Actually) as his loyal friend, Dr. John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade. The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain -- they live at the same address, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them. And so across three thrilling, scary, action-packed, and highly entertaining television movies, Sherlock and John navigate a maze of cryptic clues and lethal killers to get at the truth.
In this fresh reinterpretation, Dr. Watson is a doctor, soldier, war hero, and lost soul. Fresh from fighting the war in Afghanistan, a chance encounter brings him into the world of Sherlock Holmes: the loner-detective-genius. Sherlock can tell a software designer by his tie or an airline pilot by his thumb. His unique analytical brain allows him to earn his living (and stave off boredom) by solving crimes -- the weirder and more baffling, the better. The two men couldn't be more different, but Sherlock's inspired leaps of intellect coupled with John's pragmatism soon forge an unbreakable alliance. Across three thrilling, scary, action-packed and highly entertaining television movies, Sherlock and John navigate a maze of cryptic clues and lethal killers to get at the truth. The world's favorite detective has come out of the fog. With sparkling scripts and unforgettable performances from the two leads, this is Sherlock for a new generation.

fantastic series- Sherlock Holmes at his best!

The acting is superior, Sherlock Holmes set in contemporary times and still all the drama and suspense of what one expects from Sherlock Holmes is there. You throw in Moriarty in the final episode with a wonderful cliffhanger and it good not get any better. For any one who loves a good mystery this series is it. PBS did a wonderful job in showing it and BBC was smart enough in putting in a DVD format. If only someone was bright enough to make it a regular series.

    Best Shelock Holmes ever!!!!

The BBC have truely outdone them selves this time, bringing a witty, brilliant, and addicting Sherlock Holmes to life on the TV. The twist? Holmes is brought into the 21st century, but before you cringe Holmes and Watson still maintain their classic personalities, characteristics and friendship of Doyles' classic tales. Playing Holmes is Benedict Cumberbatch, who grabs your attention in every scene and does not let it go, bringing to life the sardonic, but witty and brilliant characteristics that attracts us to Holmes. Martin Freeman plays Dr. John Watson and gives that perfect balance of a man who is both revolted and fascinated by Holmes at the same time. Bringing this show to air are Co-creators, writers, and producers, Steven Moffatt, and Mark Gattis (who also plays Holmes' brother Mycroft). Moffatt and Gattis both write and produce for Doctor Who, and have brought their genuis creativity to another beloved character breathing new life into it.

I love the program, but unfortunately, I found the Blue Ray version very poorly executed. Not sure if it was just the copy I purchased, but the sound is so low that to understand the dialogue, I needed to turn the volume very high, which caused some distortion. Also, the colors appear faded and dark, which having seen the program on TV in Europe, was not the intention of the cinematographer. Finally, for some reason, my player does not save the position of the playback when I turn it off (this is the only Blue Ray where I have this problem), and because the chapters are mostly divided into intervals of greater than 10 minutes, it is difficult to relocate where I left off if I need to stop temporarily. Still, this is the best rendition of the Sherlock Holmes character I have seen in years. I can't wait for season 3!

    Brilliant!

I just finished watching the first season of Sherlock and I will say if you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, you will love it! Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock is spot on with all the eccentricities fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles' Sherlock Holmes have always appreciated. As a photographer I also enjoyed the cinematography, especially the use of tilt-shift effects in some scenes. This is a must buy if you really like clever, well thought out mystery or detective shows. BBC is first rate at producing these types of shows.
