The Villain

Overview

Hal Needham's odd Western-comedy The Villain comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, and Thai subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include bonus trailers of other titles. Road-Runner fun with live actors

Viewing The Villian is like watching a live Road-Runner cartoon. Kirk Douglas is great as the villian who never has anything go right for him (at least till the end of the movie). Arnold Swarzenegger plays a bland hero, though I believe that was intentional. Ann-Margret really brings the sexiness in the damsel-in-distress, though its clear she's not as innocent as most others are. The movie feels like a cartoon that you've seen many other times, but Kirk really makes it worthwhile.

The Villain -- Just Plain Fun

This little-known movie is high on my favorites list to show to friends for a fun evening. Kirk Douglas is kind of a parody of himself in all his other movies and does a great job of it. Ann-Margret has never looked more fetching (it is a Western, after all) and you've never seen Paul Lynde in all his glory until you see him as Nervous Elk the great Indian chief. Even Kirk's(Cactus Jack's)horse Whiskey is a character in his own right. Things seem a little strange as they go along and get stranger the further you go, but all is understood in the end. Enjoy getting there. (Let your friends figure it out as they go; watch it all dawn on them.)
