The WizDirector: Sidney Lumet
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls. ~ Derek Armstrong

Back in 1975, "The Wiz" soared onto Broadway and immediately became a smash hit. Despite all the criticism the movie gets, it's still an awesome film. I loved Diana Ross as Dorothy. Listening to her sing "Home" always makes me cry. The music is great to listen to as she journey's through the jazzin' land of Oz. Any OZ fan will love "The Wiz".
I love this movie, used to freak me out a tad when I was little but I was SO glad I found it when I got older. I appreciated it a lot more. Great movie, if you want to say your TRULY love musicals you must see this one.
This was an excellent musical! One to definitly add to the collection. A Star filled cast, full of energy and a positive message.
I'm watching this movie right now and I watched it last night too. It's simply the best movie ever. I know it word for word! :) I used to watch it when I was younger and now I'm 19 and still in love with it. I know my parents watched it when they were younger too. It's a family favorite! Just the best!
I watched this movie throughtout my entire life, and love it even more each time i see it. Now that i am a mother i am so glad that movies like this one still exist.
I remember watching The Wiz when I was a child and loving the songs. Especially Michael's singing and the song 'Brand New Day'. I would dance through the house. 20 years later I find myself doing the same, but appreciating the music even more! This movie is rich to the ears and the eyes. I wish it came on t.v. annually. Can't wait to get the soundtrack!
This movie, I remember watching as a child and being fascinated; watching it as an adult, I have enjoyed it even more!! The music, the creativity, and the talent was on a plateau of its own. It just reminded me of how much soul, color, and creativity we have in our blood. I loved it then, and I love it even more and have a greater appreciation for it now.
this movie is the best movie not to mention musical i have ever seen. Once you see it once you have to see it again and again and again.
Had this movie on VHS growing up going to my grandmas just searched for it and seen for sale on Barnes and noble I had to have it brings back so many memories love this movie very excited to have ordered and show my son :)
This movie took me a long ways back. I was only 7 or 8 when my mom took me to see The Wiz. I really enjoyed and loved seeing my idol Michael Jackson! He was funny as the Scarecrow. The cast was really awesome, the music, the costumes and the dancers were totally hot! We lost 4 cast members from this movie, Nipsey Russell, Richard Pryor, Lena Horne and the King of Pop Michael Joseph Jackson. Let's remember them for giving us their music and acting. Without them they would've not given us the Wiz. I recommend this video to any who is a die hard M.J. fan. Let's take time out since Black History Month is almost over to reminisce about these wonderful entertainers who gave all to their fans. Nipsey, Richard, Lena and Michael, thank you so much. You all are so missed by the fans who loved you. Rest in peace my friends.
The Wiz is a great movie that has a star studded cast among many other things. This movie stars people such as Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and many others. There are so many reason why love this movie to death. It has inspirational song, great costumes, and an awesome soundtrack and there is nothing that can ever compare. If I can describe this movie in one word it would be timeless. I feel that a movie's ultimate goal is to be timeless; Sidney Lumet (writer) and Rob Cohen (producer) achieved that goal. They set up the plots perfectly; they make you feel like you are in the movie. The reason I love this move is because every time I watch it, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy. It is just one of those movies that you can just pop in and watch with family and enjoy over and over again. To me, the most memorable song was a song sung by Diana Ross, it was entitled "Home". Dorothy sings this song on her way home from the world of OZ. The reason I think this song is so memorable because it relates to anyone when they are away from home and want to be back. Another one of my favorite songs is "You Can't Win" sung by one of my favorite people, Michael Jackson. It speaks to people because there are people that don't want us to succeed in life; they would do anything to see us fail. This movie in general makes you feel every emotion including sadness, happiness, appreciation, and most of all love. That why this movie is a great purchase, it is a great movies for you and your family to enjoy together.
I remember watching this movie when it first was shown years ago. Was so glad it went to dvd and now I can watch it over whenever I want. Kinda makes me sad at times when michael's part comes up because I start thinking about the great loss, but then I remember and think about what he left behind for all of his fans to enjoy thru his music, videos and dance!..His legacy will go on forever as far as I'm concern! This dvd is great and would recommend it to all who love MJ and those who just would like to see it!
As I grew up watching the movie I learned to love it and enjoy it as well . To me it's a feel good movie that makes my soul sing out . It's so good that I watch it almost everyday all the legendary singers like Diana Ross and Michael Jackson make good actors and makes the movie worth seeing it again and again .
Absolutely fantastic! I love Michael and always will. The cast was great it was very entertaining!
One of my favorite plays and movies!!
This movie was such a joy to watch years ago. I bought it to share with the grandkids, They were glued to it!
i loved how Diana acted in the beginning and the music is amazing. Michael was so cute in his scarecrow character and he did a great job as well. i don't know why it flopped because i sure enjoyed watching it with my sister.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE !!! I simply can’t say enough good things about this movie. The Soundtrack is excellent, the casting is excellent. Richard Pryor as the Wiz, Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Nipsey Russell as the Tin Man, Lena Horne as the good witch, the list goes on and on. Everyone gave the performance of a lifetime in this movie. You can tell that everyone loved what they were doing and were really into their characters, Diana Ross as a very a naive Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the ever so shy scarecrow. I just can’t say enough good things - this is a classic and should go into the top 100 movies of all time. This is a true classic. Everyone wants to say that Gone with the Wind is a classic then The Wiz should be too! Please buy this movie. You will not be disappointed ! ! !
My daughter loves watching this movie. She became a Michael Jackson fan at the time of his untimely death. Michael's performance is great. I've been a fan for years. My only compliant is that the movie is starting to freeze and will then skip to the next scene.
This was one of the most entertaining movies of my childhood. I had such good memories of the great music and fun of this movie, I bought it recently, and to my surprise, I loved it more as an adult. As an African-American child, The Wiz took a story we knew all too well and re-created it in a big onscreen production with music influences and a stage presentation that reflected our differences. Michael Jackson was awesome performing ''You Can't Win,'' which reminded me just of how much talent he posesses. (I wish that old Michael was still around, but that's another review.) Nipsey Russell and Lena Horne are also spectacular. I can watch this movie over and over again!
just the songs alone make you rethink and consider your life and the possibilities in soo many ways. the wiz is a roller coaster ride of enjoyment, inspiration and self-clarity. the wizard of oz showed the meaning of family but the wiz teaches you to look deep inside yourself for all the meanings of things you will come encounter with. friendship and self perserverence are fundamental elements in this movie. although this is an all black cast, the wiz can, will and does reach out to all.
Amazing!!!! ignore the thumbs down people!!!! buy it!!!!!! i highly recommend it!!!! my school just did a musical on this and it was awesome! i was the 2nd winkie!!!!!!
