Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Picking up where the first Underworld left off, this similarly action-packed sequel continues to chronicle the centuries-old war between the Death Dealers vampires and Lycans werewolves. Selene Kate Beckinsale, the sexiest vampire ever to fill out a black latex bodysuit, joins forces with Lycan hybrid Michael Scott Speedman. Their assignment: to foil Marcus Tony Curran before he can free his Lycan brother, William Brian Steele, from eternal imprisonment. Once again, returning writer-director Len Wiseman has the characters accomplish this task with much martial-arts mayhem and bloodletting; Evolution's budget must have allowed plenty of money for the gooey red stuff, because it's splattered around indiscriminately. The fight scenes -- all choreographed and edited to the nines -- clearly took precedence over such script considerations as logic, but filmmakers in the vamps-vs.-werewolves biz rarely favor substance over style. Character actors Derek Jacobi and Bill Nighy lend their formidable talents to the ensemble, and their presence is welcome. Like them, Beckinsale whose steamy love scene with Speedman is the movie's one non-lethal highlight emerges with her dignity intact and makes Evolution a worthy successor to the original.
All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
Audiences that fed into its predecessor's mix of horror and exploitive double-gun action will be pleased with Underworld: Evolution, a pulpy sequel that soberly soaks in its own mythology while delivering a less derivative retread of the pop-cinema imagery that critically killed the first film. No doubt about it, the picture is still a latex lover's dream, but at least there's a bit more of the monsters this time around to balance the genre-bending cocktail. As was the first film's strength, the best thing here is the story, which continues to expand the better-than-average underworld folklore. Also impressive are the creature effects, which have been given a well-needed overhaul from the hyena-like werewolf wannabes of the first film. Kate Beckinsale once again shoulders the goth dramatics efficiently, with a brief flashback appearance by Bill Nighy stealing the show in just the few minutes that open the film. There are still plenty of silly questions left to be answered, the biggest being why Beckinsale's character inherited special powers in the final reel only to fall back on gun theatrics in the big showdown -- then again, maybe that's to be expected in an Underworld movie. These flicks aren't solid gold, but they are stylized distractions that the masses can easily eat up. And if that means big monster shoot-outs, then so be it.

This is a great film that I have watch many times. The film has many different sub-plots going on at once. The main plot to me is the battle between the vampires and the lycans.
You also have the "Romeo and Juliet" love story, also. There is a power struggle between the upper ranks of both sides. The fight scenes were awesome and the special effects could not of been better. There is plenty of act in the movie, not many slow sceens. The film has all the key parts that make a great film.

    What's not to love?

This movie is addicting I would watch it a million times if I had the choice, but sadly I've only seen it once. But it is indeed unforgettable. Selene (The main character) is a very brave warrior. Her romance for Michael (the other main character) is strong and causes her to do more heroic acts to save him. Marcus is an evil main character that causes problems for the rest of the characters in the movie. The events that happen are not what you think. The graphics are amazing. The characters all have their own stories and pasts. Personally I believe the actors and actresses that play the characters are correct, no one besides the people they chose could play the roles better. The Sound track was amazing, the music always matching up to the events that were taking place, nothing like in the horror movies when you hear the scary music and you know that a scary event is going to occur, in this movie nothing is called for and nothing is unexpected. It's an eyes glued to the screen movie!

I really loved the first underworld, I could watch it over and over again 50 times in a row, but I can't with Evolution. I'm just saying it's not as good as the first, but if you're a true fan, go ahead and watch it... and it didn't have a very well written plot as the first one, it was just markus trying to kill Selene and Michael, which seem like they hardly know and love each other...

    Done(nicely)2nd time around...

The ACTioN continues with Underworld: EVOLUTiON. i DO enjoy this piece of work, but for an escapist(like mE)- it's a tiny bit..."oh yeah, that avenue" ...and the one scene makes mE giggle, because of the timing. All in all...i watch this one over&over&over again (too)...but the (ORiGiNaL) IS mY FAVORiTE, so far!!!

    Does a sequel right

If you have seen the first, this one starts exactly where it left off and continues, almost as if it was shot at the same time. Kate Beckinsale plays a fantastic character and honestly she has never looked hotter than when she has been in this role. Very violent movie, as it should be. Recommended for fans of the original or fans of vampire flicks.

    Wow-it's even better!

If you thought "Underworld" was great, get ready for a surprise-this one is even better! You ain't seen nothing yet!Len Wiseman and Danny McBride have taken everything that worked in the first film and made it better, from their terrific story and script to Wiseman's strong direction, the gorgeous production, and Marco Beltrami's brilliant score. And they have topped it off with, well, what a cast! All of them are excellent.Derek Jacobi and Bill Nighy are brilliant,Scott Speedman(yes, ladies,he's hunkier than ever!) is terrific, and Kate Beckinsale is dynamite! Action and horror fans.sit back and enjoy!

    It was O.K.

this is a very unique movie, but the plot was just way to hard to follow. the fight scenes were awesome and the special effects couldn't of been better. there was alot of blood, but what do you expect, IT'S A VAMPIRE MOVIE!! some parts of the movie were completly pointless and on top of that it wasn't even scary. it was too long for an action movie. however if you are into this go see it.

    MUST SEE!!!

THIS WAS A VERY INTERESTING MOVIE, THE PLOT HAD DEPTH WHICH IS CAPTIVATING AND THOUGHTFULL. BRINGING BACK VICTOR ALONG WITH AMELIA WAS ALSO A BIG PLUS FOR THE MOVIE. THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL VAMPIRE MOVIE WITH THE SAME PREDICTABLE STUF, WHICH TO ME ADDS TO THE GREATNESS OF THIS MOVIE. I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GO AND RENT OR BUY THIS MOVIE ALONG WITH THE FIRST UNDERWORLD.

    Truly disappointing

This movie was probably the sickest vampire movie ever made. The tremondous amount of blood was unessecary! There were also some scenes of nudity which had no meaning to the story and was just sick to look at. The first underworld is a must see but this one no. Don't waste your time.

    Okay....

I saw this movie resently and I have to say it was good, but I think they could've eased up on the gore and well....you know.... I've seen the first one and it was awesome. This one was pretty good for a sequeal. And honestly I was shocked to see what happened at the very end! Over all It was pretty good.

    A GREAT SEQUEL!!!

The special effects and story line were fantastic. It was so action packed. The only thing about the movie that wasn't up to par was the involvement of the head werewolf. All he did was jump around and growl. As far as the new breed of vampire, he was great. A cunning and powerful opponent for Selin. All in all is was an extremely enjoyable movie and I'm hoping for a third.

The sequel to Underworld continues with Selene and Michael as they are wanted by their enemies all the while trying to stop a massive war from starting once again between themselves and the werewolves.

    Kick-Butt

Underworld: Evolution managed something that few sequels can accomplish - it continued the story without murdering itself and ruining the original. The acting was phenomenal and the action was gnarly. Kudos, major kudos, to the authors, who have come out with one of the most original vampire storylines in years from Hollywood.

    Fantastic

This sequel to Underworld had an intriguing plot and interesting characters. However, the multiple nudity scenes were unnecessary in my opinion. Snaps to Beckinsale and Speedman for another great movie.

this was a great show and did justice to the first one but i agree with the first reviewer it really didn't need the nudity..... but i don't think that took away the mastery of the movie and how amazing it was
